Hello all,
This is my first post in the Boylikegirl Club community, and this is my entry to the contest Do you have any new year costumes in your country. It was a great pleasure to participate in this contest. @boylikegirl.club organizes the contest.
My country, Sri Lanka, celebrates two new years. The first one is celebrated on the 1st of January, which is celebrated worldwide. People use this new year to get a new beginning in their lives.
The second one is celebrated on April 13 or 14 by Sri Lankans. This New Year is named Sinhala-Tamil New Year, a traditional new year filled with many costumes and cultural events. During the Sinhala-Tamil New Year, most events occur in the village areas. Everyone wears traditional clothes like a Sarong or a Gown. These clothes are normal clothes in Sri Lankan culture, but during the New Year, these clothes get great attention. For special occasions, ladies wear Sarees during this time. Also, Lungi also becomes a popular costume during the New Year time. It is very pleasant to see little children who wear these clothes playing all around with adults. In particular, these clothes are not very popular in the urban areas. But the people spend most of their time in villages during the New Year time period, and they tend to wear these cloths during the New Year vacation.
The image here I attached was taken at an event that I participated in during my university undergraduate period. You can see that I'm wearing the Sarong, which is the traditional New Year costume for the Sinhala-Tamil New Year.
Actually, the Sarong is my favorite cloth to wear even in my day-to-day life.
Apart from the costumes, Children and young adults participate in the new year sports like Onchilla Padima, Lissana Gaha Nageema, Andhayata Asa Thabima, Kana Mutti Bideema, and Kotta Pora Gaseema. A lot of foreigners are also visiting our country during this period to enjoy this wonderful time.
Also, we make special foods like Mun Kawum, Hadi Kawum, Athi Rasa, Kokis, Welithalapa, Aluwa, Pani Walalu, and many more. The New Year table is filled with all these foods during the New Year.
The New Year's Day is totally about Nakaths. Nakaths are the special times that we use to start cooking, eating, and working on New Year's Day. All the Sri Lankan people do these works precisely at these times. Nakaths are the main events of the new year.
So, if you are planning to visit Sri Lanka, April is the best time to enjoy all the traditional events with these beautiful clothes.
