What is an open marriage?
Open marriage stands for a type of marriage in which both partners who have been married to each other, allow each other to have some sexual partner besides their relation. It is a type of non-monogamy in which both partners know about their sexual partners and their content is involved in it. In other words, an open marriage means having a sexually shared relationship with a spouse.
History of Open Marriage
Ancient History
The culture of polygamy is not modern but comes from ancient times. Studies have shown that the ancient civilizations were more social and open about their marital life and they used to have more than one sexual partner: both male and female (husband and wife).
In Modern World
This idea gained a spark in the early 1900s when the world was making progress and many intellectual people thought about having open marriages. Moreover, a book was published in 1970 by George and Nena O'Neill with the title of "Open Marriage" to give a public view about this concept of marriage. This book was the NEW YORK TIMES best seller for 40 Weeks and it, according to one report, was translated into 14 different languages. This book raised again the concept of open marriages in the modern world.
My Point of View about Open Marriage
In my point of view, it is an unjustified way to get into a relationship with another person even if one has consent to have some other partner sexually out to the marriage. It is immoral that there is one other person to interfere in the private life of the couple even if he has consent to do. If we see this from a social point of view, it is shameful for someone that he/she has allowed to share his/she has allowed to share their partners with others. Here are some points disgrading the open marriage in my point of view.
Complexity in Relations
Just think about why a man marries a woman and why a woman marries a man. This is purposed for making the life simple and better. And now think that both partners share their bodies. So, it will be more complex to understand that if they love each other then why they are doing marital activities with other people? This is about to interfere the personal life directly and the marital relation will always be complex in such relation.
Breaking of trust
Another reason that one should not make an open marriage is that both partners lose their trust. There are a lot of studies available on the internet showing the depression and the post-marriage conditions of such couples.
Health Issues
There many many health issues in such relations. In this century the most incurable disease is HIV/AIDS and it mostly spreads unsafe sexual contact. When someone has more than one sexual partner then the risk of spreading this disease is too high to control. So, therefore one should avoid such relations.
Religious references
In Islam
Being a Muslim, I am going to share the Islamic references discarding the open marriage.
In Surah An-Nisa (4:3) Allah says;
"Then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one."
Here the verse does not mean that females can have the sexual partners more than one. But the important point is that males can have more than one wife only with this condition if they can please them otherwise they are not allowed to have any sexual partner. However, females are not allowed to have more than one partner until their first partner dies or divorces.
Other Religions
Other religions like Hinduism, Jewish, Christianity, and Buddhism have certain trusted references that one should not allowed to share partner with others. Therefore, polyamory is forbidden in every famous religion in the world in some sense because it mostly promotes trustlessness weak relations, and moral disrespect.
Conclusion:
The overall conclusion is that I do not support open marriage because of all of the reasons I described in the upper section. But this is just my point of view. One can choose any way to make life happy and peaceful.
