One of the most important and remembered days in Nigeria is 1st October. This story came about 64 years ago. Precisely in 1960, Nigeria gained her independence and was declared free from her colonial masters.

Nigeria's independence was championed by the nationalist movement of the likes of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr Obafemi Awolowo and a host of others. History has it that Nigeria's independence was gained without bloodshed but with a ball pen.

Currently, 1st October is usually celebrated with a public holiday and lots of activities such as:

  • Parades and speech: This usually includes military parades and a host of other parades e.g. school children, government organizations, non-governmental organizations etc., as they beautifully showcase their marching skills to celebrate Nigeria's independence.

These parades are usually done at various local government areas and states across Nigeria. It also comes with historical and educational speeches as well as votes of thanks to God, Nigerians and all political leaders.

  • Cultural Displays and Festivals: During this period
All over Nigeria, people celebrate with cultural performances, including unique traditional dances, music, and masquerades. These events show the many unique cultures in Nigeria and promote its national pride.

  • School Events and Youth Activities: Schools also celebrate independence by engaging children in essay competitions, parades, debates etc. Children also dress in green and white (Nigeria's national colors) and showcase talents through dance competitions, recitations, songs, quizzes etc.

  • Media and broadcast stations are usually part of the temporary frenzy as they make documentaries showcasing the nation and her growth. The social media also get flooded with write-ups, national symbols etc.

  • Fireworks and lighting displays in the night and street parties are also part of this great celebration.

  • Religious activities are not left behind, as churches and mosques also carve out time to give thanks to God and possibly host programs. I usually attend a particular program at Destiny International Mission Ewet Housing Estate, usually tagged "Sing Freedom" where beautiful choral voices come in accord to sing unto God.

Nigeria’s Independence Day reminds every Nigerians of their perseverance and values. So, every year, Nigerians come together to celebrate the spirit of unity in the diversity of its culture and, show how far she as a country has thrived.

@eveetim and @bluelavender I am sure our country has many other days to celebrate.
