A wood fire is a hot, bright flame produced by burning wood. When wood burns, it reacts with oxygen in the air to create heat, light, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Wood fires can be used for cooking or to provide warmth.
Here are some properties of wood fires:
Ignition temperature
Wood usually ignites at 250–300°C, but the exact temperature depends on how long the wood is exposed to heat.
Carbonization
After ignition, wood begins to carbonize at a rate of 0.8 mm per minute.
Thermal softening
Dry wood begins to soften at about 180°C, and reaches its maximum between 320°C and 380°C.
Smoke
Smoke from wood fires can pollute the atmosphere and contain chemicals that can be carcinogenic.
Ash
Wood fires produce ash, which is made up of minerals in the wood that react with air during combustion.
Wood fires can also create problems in chimneys, depositing soot and creosote that can ignite if not cleaned regularly.
