Henry Ford (1863-1947) was an American industrialist and businessman who revolutionized the automobile industry with the development of the assembly line technique. He was born on July 30, 1863, in Greenfield Township, Michigan, to William and Mary Ford. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker.
In 1891, Ford became an engineer with the Detroit Edison Company. He spent his free time tinkering with engines and building experimental automobiles. In 1896, he completed his first car, the Quadricycle, which had four bicycle wheels and was powered by a two-cylinder gasoline engine.
In 1903, Ford founded the Ford Motor Company with a group of investors. The company's first car, the Model A, was introduced in 1903. However, it was the Model T, introduced in 1908, that put Ford on the map. The Model T was affordable and reliable, and it quickly became the best-selling car in America. Ford's success was due in part to his use of the assembly line technique, which allowed for mass production of cars at a lower cost.
Ford was a controversial figure in his time. He was a staunch supporter of the American eugenics movement, which sought to improve the genetic quality of the human race. He also had a reputation for being anti-Semitic and for his association with the Nazi regime in Germany.
In addition to his work in the automobile industry, Ford was also a philanthropist. He founded the Ford Foundation in 1936, which has since become one of the world's largest charitable organizations.
