Your steam account was compromised and you do not know what to do. The hacker may have spent all of the money in your steam wallet and traded off all of the items in your steam inventory. This is a very serious problem because the longer you wait, the less chance you have to recover your money and your account. There is a single solution with multiple steps to secure your account and recover everything you have lost.
Secure your computer and your account
You first have to secure your computer before your account can be safe. This is done by getting rid of viruses and changing both your steam password, and your email password. After securing your computer you should take preventative measures so you do not get hacked again.
Run an antivirus scan and delete recently downloaded software
There are multiple ways that you may have been hacked. The main possibilities are you mistakenly installed a program that was a key logger or Remote Access Trojan (RAT). Your first priority should be to remove these viruses. Changing your account information while a key logger or a RAT is on your computer will not secure your account due to the hacker automatically getting your new information. To get rid of the viruses you should delete any software you have recently downloaded before you got hacked and then run an antivirus scan. If it turned out you had a key logger or a RAT, it will get deleted through this process.
Change your email password
Your email account is another way your steam account could have gotten compromised. This is especially the case if you had steam guard on your account because the hacker would need access to your email to get on your steam account. To change your email password, go on the website you created your email on, go to your account, and click change password. When changing your password, make sure it is unique and uses a variety of letters, numbers, and miscellaneous characters.
Change your steam password
After securing your computer and your email, it is time to change your steam account password. To change your password, log into steam, click view, click settings, go into the account tab, and click change password. Enter your new password and you are done.
Recovering lost funds and items
You may think that the money the hacker spent on your account and the items you had in your steam inventory that are gone now are lost forever. In most cases they are not. If you are missing steam wallet funds and they were spent on games, you can refund those games through steam. If your steam wallet funds were spent on something else or if items are missing from your inventory, you will have to contact steam support. To do so, on steam click help, then steam support. Choose the My Account option and then click I have a different issue with my account. Then choose the option to contact steam support. Valve is usually nice about this and if done quickly after the hack, they will most likely refund you as long as it is your first time asking for this favor and as long as you then take preventative measures to not get hacked again in the future.
Take preventative measures
A good way to prevent getting hacked in the future is to enable an authenticator on your steam account and enable 2-step verification on your email account. Steam offers an authenticator through their android and iOS app. To enable 2-step verification go onto your email, go under sign-in and security under account settings and click enable 2-step verification. Then follow the instructions on the page.
Conclusion
Securing your account is as simple as following these simple steps. If you followed these steps in order, it will be nearly impossible for your steam account to get hacked again in the future. As a bonus, you will also most likely get your steam funds, and inventory items back.
