Talking About Backstory and Exposition
Hello! How are you guys and welcome to the writer's life. Today we are talking about Backstory and Exposition. Two words that give many writers goosebumps.
Let's just say this is a long post, but a very helpful post and I hope you read it.
Yes, you should read it just by saying. But when I read this post I thought, I really want to write about this and learn more about why exposition or background disclosure is actually a good thing when we show or tell you.
I love rewriting stories. It just makes me happy.
Okay, so you can imagine how sad it is when I hear popular writing advice to avoid exposition at all costs, because no one wants to read the background.
Oh okay. I've hated this advice for a long time. I think it's true. But I soon discovered that was not true.
First, let's break down the word exposition. This basically means discarding info or giving the audience all the information they need to know to understand what is going on. Is the information a scientific or historical explanation of something that built the world, or something about a character's past that helps the reader understand why he acts and thinks the way he does now.

But wait, one of them is not like the other. Do you know which one it is?
Okay, since you didn't say anything, I'll just tell you. It is the background of the character's past, the background of the character's past, but more specifically, what happened in their past that influences who they are today.
Why do we need to know this? Because that's the story. Didn't see it coming? Are you all story driven by characters, at least all the ones that are really good and catch your eye? Why? Because you are driven by character.
You can relate to someone with desire, fear and struggle because you are a person with desire, fear and struggle. But in the same way you don't care about strangers you pass on the street, you don't care about characters you don't know.
I've learned that if you can get people to emotionally invest in your character, you don't even need a great plot. But that's another story for another time.
Now all I want to talk about is exposition. I can understand why people think expositions are bad because, I mean, let's face it. No one wants to open a book or watch a movie star and just be buried under a pile of cut and dry information.
Our founders built a wall to keep us safe and they divided us into five groups. The smart one is the learned Amity formula and honesty that values honesty, then there is the brave, my group is Abnegation.
Now when it comes to world building, and understanding the facts behind certain scientific or historical matters, you will be surprised at how much the human brain can piece together and understand without much information at all.
But human emotions are a little more complicated. And human emotion is the driving force behind your story. You have to do this right.
But how do you get someone to care about a character they just met three seconds ago? I do not know. Why do you care about your best friend because you know what her dreams and desires are? You know what he's afraid of? You know what he did wrong? The things he mistakenly believed to be true, you know, his background, therefore, you cared about them.
Why do you care? Because you know how they feel? Maybe not exactly. But basically you can see something from the point of view, and understand why he felt the way he did it. And that's what we want our readers to do with our character, right. That's why backstory is important.
But how do we include backstory, in our story without exposition? Um, we can't backstory, basically is an exposition that submits audience information that they need to know so that they can understand why they should care.
So here's the real question. Should the exposition always be avoided? No, wait anywhere. Lying low.
Wait, let's use an example. So you don't throw the tomatoes to me, Disney's very successful film that struck more than $ 1.2 billion, and must, under any circumstances called better than tangles, frozen. The first minute of the first film was pure background, showing us exactly how other Anan's relationship begins and finally collapsed, which sets the conflict for the entire film.
So, what we learn about our protagonists here, we see the moment that changes everything, when he accidentally hurts his sister, caught his norms on the life of isolation. What he really wanted, what he believed would really make him happy, but he couldn't do it because he was a queen and had to run the country.
But it's not just his responsibility that blocks the road. This is a deep fear that jumps from a decisive moment for the past for fear of others with its strength, specifically, seeing what is created and irresistible, you might want to feel the same about Elsa, if the film is opened where The story really starts.
Instead, you might think, why this girl was very afraid to let people come to her house, and she was just introverted.
Many films and books are successful using exposition not to delete a large amount of information about the audience, but to make them care about what happens to the character, basically grabbing the throat and don't let them go.
I said before. And I will say it again. And I will say it forever. The story is not about what happened. It's about how the character changes as a result of their trip. All good stories are driven by characters. So, don't believe anyone who tells you that it's bad to give the audience, the more information they need to make the deepest connection that might be with your character.
But remember, the only thing about your character background is really important from the gate, what character wants and believes it will make them happy what the character is afraid of cutting their worst scenario. And what character is mistakenly believes is true about the world in shows in their past which makes them think like this.
I want to talk more about this all day. But for your valuable time, I will stop now.
But I might make more writing like this in the future about dumping info and the world building and how to explain things without making your readers sleep.
So, if you want to see more writing like that. Comments below and tell me your opinion about this article and tell me what you think about all of these topics. How do you feel about exposition or info throw away or learn many things about backstory characters?
When a first book starts or film, all kinds of stories? What do you feel about it? What do you think about it? Everyone has an opinion about that right? So comment below and tell me. I want to chat with you. I reply to every comment and I really appreciate your feedback. And only I really appreciate you here sitting there reading this paper. Thank you for all!
