Hello Friends, How are You?

Today I got a chance to say something about the heritage of my hometown Sylhet. Which is a famous city in Bangladesh. I was born in this city. I congratulate the honorable moderator @damithudaya for organizing such a contest named
''Historical Knowledge of Your City''.

Sylhet is a major city in north-eastern Bangladesh, as well as a divisional city of Sylhet Division. It belongs to Sylhet district. This city on the banks of the Surma River is one of the most important cities in Bangladesh. This city of natural beauty is known as the spiritual capital of the country. Sylhet is economically known as the most prosperous district of Bangladesh. Sylhet is one of the richest districts in South Asia in terms of industry, natural resources, and economy.

Naming History:

The famous Muslim traveler Al-Biruni mentioned Sylhet as 'Silahat' in his book 'Kitabul Hind'. Various names are mentioned in ancient books about the origin of the name Sylhet. According to Hindu scriptures, the severed hand of Sati Devi, the wife of Shiva, fell in this region; hence, the Hindu community believes that the name Srihatta is derived from 'Sri Hasta'. It is said that when Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) came to 'Sylhet', the enemy party attacked him, and his followers, 360 Auliyas, were trapped by 'rocks' or'stones'. Then, by the infinite mercy of Almighty Allah, he said 'Shilahat' (meaning, remove the stone). Then the stones moved. From this, the name 'Shilahat' is given. Then the name has to be simplified to 'Shilhat', 'Silahet', and 'Sylhet'.

Historical Background:

Sylhet is an ancient town. Sylhet was named Jalalabad during the Sultanate period. The Paschimbagh copper plate engraved by Maharaja Srichandra in the 10th century states that he conquered Sylhet. Historians believe that Sylhet or Srihatta (rich hut) existed as a flourishing trading center long ago. There was a huge Bengali migration to ancient Srihatta. In the 14th century, the Yemeni saint Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) conquered Sylhet and started spreading Islam.

During the Mughal era, the Pathan warrior Khwaja Osman fought against the invading Mughals with the help of the local feudal lords of Sylhet. In 1857, during the rebellion in Sylhet, the rebels fought against the British Baniyas and failed. Nankar's Rebellion is an important event in Sylhet's history. The Nankars were serfs of the landlords. This custom was abolished in 1950 after several other rebellions, including the Nanakar Rebellion.

Founding period:

Sylhet district was established on March 17, 1772. Till 1874, this district was included in Dhaka Division. Sylhet Municipality was created in 1878. On June 12, 1897, a severe earthquake almost completely destroyed the entire city. Later, a more beautiful and modern European-style city was built on the ruins. Several roads were built in the late 1890s. Sylhet's isolation from the rest of the country was effectively ended when a branch of the Assam Bengal Railway was connected to Sylhet in 1912–15. The importance of the city of Sylhet increased in the early 20th century due to the tea industry. In the 1950s and 1960s, the expatriate Sylhetites and the city of Sylhet began to urbanize and continue to do so today rapidly.

Sylhet District:
