Aceh Province is an area that has various traditions passed down from generation to generation and has existed since ancient times. Various traditions are still maintained today amidst the era of modern technology in the country nicknamed the Veranda of Mecca. Meugang has become a unique tradition when welcoming the holy month of Ramadan. The tradition of the Acehnese people in welcoming the fasting month is to slaughter animals one or two days before the fasting month.
Meugang is a day celebrated by cooking and eating meat together with all family members. This activity of cooking and eating meat is carried out the day before the fasting month and holidays. This day is a time used by families in Aceh as a time to gather and eat together. In fact, it is not uncommon for families in Aceh to also invite orphans and the poor to enjoy togetherness on this Meugang day.
Even though many Acehnese people consume meat almost every day, the tradition of eating meat on meugang day is something special. Meugang is considered to have religious value because it is performed at times that are considered sacred for Muslims. For the people of Aceh, Ramadan is considered a month to purify oneself. The people of Aceh firmly believe that the income they have earned for eleven months is enjoyed during Ramadan while praying.
The meugang tradition has even existed since the glory days of the Islamic kingdom of Iskandar Muda. However, there is something a little different when this meugang day arrives in Aceh. The price of beef which can usually be obtained is between IDR 140,000 - 150,000,- when this meat can increase to IDR 180,000 to IDR 200,000,- per kilogram. In general, the people of Aceh never mind the soaring prices. People still buy meat on meugang day to cook and eat with their families. In general, people have prepared everything to welcome Meugang day.
