My dear friends,
My mother is the apple of my eye, but don’t let my daughter hear this, or I will be in deep trouble.
From the time I can remember, my mother’s love and unwavering support have been the guiding light on my path as I was growing up. She was my confidante, my mentor, and my closest friend, someone with whom I could share my deepest thoughts and fears. Best of all, she never judged. Make no mistake, her yes was her yes, her no was her no, and she only spoke once. After that, you will know that you are in serious trouble.
Yes, I have said, "was." Time has changed.
My mother can no longer share her faith in my abilities with me, and she can no longer encourage me. What is left is her holding my hand and the love I can still see shining through her eyes. My mother is 87, and she is living in the world of an Alzheimer's person.
Some time ago, I wrote a diary post in which I shared that my mother, my sister, and her daughter were visiting us. I thought it would be my last visit with my mother. It was not.
At the beginning of the year, I asked my sister if she thought my mom would be okay if they came and visited me one more time. As they are staying 600+ kilometers from me, we decided that my mom would never make a 6- to 7-hour drive. My sister was willing to put in some leave and fly down with my mom. My brother, on the other hand, just told us that it would never work. It will be too much of an upset for her.
I decided to buy tickets for the two of them to fly down, as we were willing to take the chance. We so wanted to show her beloved ocean one more time.
Thursday was the big day. Before the flight, I arranged with the airlines to provide my mother with frailty care treatment. When I called my sister to hear if they were okay, I could not get a hold of her. I left for the airport around ten in the morning, not knowing what to expect. I drove in and out of the parking area twice. I was so nervous. What if she could not handle the flight? I would never stop blaming myself if something had to happen to her.
I parked in the wheelchair zone and waited for them, as advised by the airline.
Then I saw them. My mother was pushed by an airport official, and my sister was huffing and puffing behind them with a bag under each arm. My mom looked so fragile and extremely tired.
As I bent down to her, she looked up into my face, and she started to cry. She called me by my name! It will forever be one of the biggest moments of my life. Little do I need to tell you that my sobs could have been heard miles away.
My mother is no longer the embodiment of strength, grace, and selflessness, who has always put the needs of her family first. She is now living in her own little world, and just like a child, she only asks for three things: shelter, food, and love. Oh no, she also asks for her sweets. Like my sister says, she is now her biggest child. Oh boy, she gets away with murder.
This, my dear friends, is what I’ve been busy with the last couple of days. I've been sitting with my mother every spare moment I have.
I am spoiling her, cooking her favorite meals, giving her those treats that she gave my children when I said no they cannot have them, and sitting watching her drawing stripes on the right-hand side of the page as she can no longer color in a full picture.
I only want to do one thing, and that is to be with my mother. This WILL be her last visit.
To me, my mother is not just my mother, but my true hero. She will always be the apple of my eye and the foundation upon which my little world was built.
Her gentle touch, her soothing voice, and her warm embrace will be missed... but not yet. For the moment, she is still with us, and I love every moment of it.
I will be back soon.
Aah!! Reading your post made me emotional and reminded me of the days of my grandmother's illness, who died of paralysis. At that time I was a 12 years old child but I still remember the last days of her life as in those days I spent a great time with her. She was very kind to me. Also my father was very closed to her and he used to sleep in her feet which was a breathtaking moment for me. Anyway no one want to see his parents getting older and suffering from diseases as these are very hard things to digest. Currently I'm praying for the speeding recovery of your mother ❤️. May Allah Almighty bless her with health Aammeeen 🤲🤗.
Your's Sincerely: @abdullahw2

Awh thank you for your prayers. 🙏
You are right, it is not easy to see a parent grow old. All we can do is build those memories. It is wonderful that you can still remember your granny from way back.
Today was a better day for her, and we took her to the ocean. She no longer wants to sit or walk on the beach, but we sat in the courtyard of one of the hotels, where she could see, smell, and hear the ocean.
She was like a kid, full of happiness.

Having affection from your mother at this age is fortunate. Even though she difficult to handle her pencil, your mother's drawing was nevertheless fantastic. I hope she has a long, healthy life.

Hello my friend!
Thank you for the visit and the kind words. 🎕
Unfortunately, those are not her drawings, but it is a junior coloring book we got for her. She cannot even color the pictures anymore. All she does is draw stripes or trace the outside of the picture on the right-hand side.
What is amazing is that when we tell her to color something green, she will take the green pencil in her hand. She still knows her colors.

Awh! This is so sweet of you to call your mom.
Believe me, that is all we want to hear, the voices of our children, especially our daughters, as they don't think that we are strange. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Oh ooo how I love the way you love your mother.
She indeed deserves to be loved even more, her sacrifice did not go in vain.
I wish to have this kind of relationship with my daughter even more than this.
The reason why most parents don't have this kind of relationship with their children is because they have refused to transit in their relationship.
When they where children you treat them a such but when they become teenagers, we should be able to fit in as a friend and a confident just as your mum did.
If not they would feel we don't understand them and this creates a huge gap.
Parenting is more than just meeting the financial need just like most African parents believe.
You most be ready to meet the psychological, emotional and spiritual need.
Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed reading and I would be looking forward to more of your lovely experience with your mom.
I can't imagine how much you would miss her.

Yip! Children should be the Alpha and Omega for all parents.
This whole situation with my mom is heartbreaking, and all we can do is give her comfort and love. I look at her, and then I wonder what she is going through. It must be difficult for her, too.
Thank you for the visit and for your kind words.
Spread the love!

What an emotional getaway in your life! It seems your mother is quite a person. Her piece of drawing is still beautiful The hardest thing is seeing our parents are getting older In front of us! Anyway I'm sure your mother can e proud of you, for what you have accomplished and what you are doing. I think you can still fly to your mom's.
I wish her good health and happiness!

Thank you for the visit and your kind words and good wishes.
Unfortunately, the drawing is not hers. It is a coloring book we bought her. What I found interesting is that she no longer finishes one picture. She keeps on turning to new and old pictures, and then she just draws a few stripes on the right hand side of the picture, never on the left. What an amazing brain we have.
Anyway, back to the cricket. (•ิ‿•ิ)
She was sitting next to me on the couch when the cricket match started on Saturday. When they finished playing SA's national anthem, she looked up and started to sing it. Not the English part and not the Afrikaans part, but the Xhosa bit "Nkosi Sikelel."
The workers on my grandpa's farm used to sing it. It was amazing, and yes, I shed a tear or two.
I forgot to answer this one.
This is the most difficult one, as with holiday accommodations, it is very difficult to just lock up and go.

Thank you so much! I will, for sure, convey your kind words to the rest of the family.
Memories... We built those memories and put them in boxes just to fetch them in later years. This is exactly what my mom is doing now.
Mothers are miracles. God's gift to all of us. (•ิ‿•ิ)
