INTRODUCTION |
---|
No society would say they have never encountered crime. The crime rate in the world entirely keeps growing. Crimes of different kinds and types are being carried out daily ranging from pity theft, and homicides to the grand patron of the world of crimes and corruption. In this entry, I will discuss the various types of crime in our society.
WHAT IS CRIME |
---|
Crime is any activity or deletion which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law. These are those activities considered to be against the growth and well-being of society at large.
TYPES OF CRIME |
---|
There are numerous types of crime existing in our society today, which are commonly grouped into different categories, such as;
- violent crime
- property crime
- white-collar crime
- organized crime, and
- consensual or victimless crime.
Violent Crime: This is a situation where the lawbreaker or offender utilizes harmful force upon a victim or sufferer. That is, it includes causing harm to another person e.g. homicide, attack, rape or sexual assault, and armed robbery.
Property Crime: this is a type of crime where the property of the victim is either stolen or destroyed, without the use of force against the victim e.g. burglary, theft, automobile theft, and arson.
White-collar Crime: This is a type of crime usually without violence, but carried out through falsehood or stashing to gain personal or business benefits. Edwin Sutherland termed it to be "a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation." Examples include corruption, fraud, money laundering, etc.
Organized Crime: this is a type of crime that is intended, planned, and carried out by influential parties or groups of people (syndicates) on a large scale. E.g. Human trafficking, drugs, illicit goods, arms dealing, counterfeiting, etc.
Consensual Or Victimless Crime: These are crimes that individuals engage themselves in that don't affect other people or property directly. E.g. the Use of Drugs, Illegal Gambling, Prostitution etc. All these are deemed illegal according to law, yet people partake in them to their detriment.
SOME COMMON CAUSES OF CRIMES |
---|
Various crimes are caused due to different reasons and motives, but among these causes the familiar ones include;
- Broken homes or divorce
- Lack of parental supervision
- Peers influence
- Poverty
- Unemployment
EFFECTS OF CRIME ON OUR SOCIETY |
---|
The most common effects are pain, suffering and a lower quality of life, leading to traumatic effects on friends and loved ones of the victims and turmoil in the family.
Crimes affect productivity in society at large. Even crimes considered victimless such as prostitution, drug abuse, and gambling have major social effects on workers' productivity, they can lead to the use of public funds for drugs and gambling addiction.
Other effects of crimes on victims include medical costs, property losses, and loss of income. Crimes can lead to the loss of life of both victims and non-victims in some cases and loss of income due to the high cost of items like stronger locks, additional lighting, fixing safety alarms, and having security dogs due to fear of being victimized.
HOW CAN WE PREVENT THE GROWING CRIME RATE |
---|
As much as crimes can never be completely abolished in a society, there are certain actions we can take to reduce the increasing crime rates. Such actions include;
• Creation of Recreational Activities such as educational and sports tournaments for youths of all age groups to participate in, thus, reducing their time of illegal activities or idleness.
• Engage Youths in Positive Ventures such as empowerment courses and training.
It is a common saying that "the idle mind is a devil's workshop". Therefore, it's crucial to have youths committed to optimistic and beneficial ventures.
• Educating the Society on Crime Prevention, and teaching growing kids the right and wrong about crime in your neighbourhood and schools would teach them of the dangers ahead.
• Creation of various employment opportunities as even graduates these days find it difficult to get jobs and in the act of surviving involve themselves in crimes.
CONCLUSION |
---|
There is no positive effect to take out from crime, therefore, one should stay as far away as his/her legs can carry from Crime. You may continue in the act because it benefits you, but in the long run of things, it can come to hurt you. Stay clear of crimes. I invite @yakspeace, @edidiongeffiong and @abdullahw2.

Crime! Such a small word with such a strong meaning!
Just earlier this week our latest crime stats were released.
You will not believe it, over 6,200 people were murdered in just 90 days! That means 70 people every day.Shocking!
More than 10,500 cases of rape.
Where will it all end? It is so sad.
Good luck with the contest!
