The memorial honors the countless people who died in the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence. Syed Mainul Hussain, an architect, designed the National Memorial, which was dedicated on December 16, 1982, a day recognized as Bangladesh's Victory Day to mark Pakistan's victory. The force surrendered to combined Bangladeshi and Indian forces, ending independence. The symbolic design of the monument embodies the nation's struggle for freedom.
