When I was in secondary school, we use to have people that come and speak to us once in a while. The aim was just to be encouraged by people who had gone ahead of us. They made us want to grow up and be like them.
One time, a young man came to speak to us. Then I thought he was tall and handsome, I don't know if I'll think the same today.😂 He spoke well and was really intelligent, I admired him.
He came to tell us to be hardworking and diligent. He said without hard work, we won't be great it life. He taught us a lot of things that I can not remember now. The only thing I remember from what he said is that some of us are sleeping away our lives.
He did all that sleep calculations that people normally do. He told us that if you sleep 8 hours a day, by the time you die, you'd have slept for about a third of your life. Then he gave us reasons why that was too much and all shades of wrong.
For a long time, that stayed with me. I tried to sleep for lesser hours. If I slept all night, I wake up feeling guilty. When I remember the scripture that says, "a little sleep, a little slumber...and poverty will come upon me," it made me feel worse. Thank God I was delivered. Now I SLEEP! I don't joke about it at all.
God knew what he was doing when he created sleep. It's a good thing. A lot of us don't know the healing power of sleep. Sleeping is not just about shutting down, you heal while you sleep.
The human brain needs about 7-8 hours of sleep to properly solve a problem that requires attention and focused thinking.
Wounds heal better when you sleep properly. Sleep helps restore sore or damaged muscles. The immune system needs sleep to be able to fight infections.
There's less demand on your body when you sleep. You give your body a break, and so the demand on your heart is less; your blood pressure drops.
Good sleep helps you have a good eating pattern. It can help you eat right and so you maintain a healthy weight.
You process information better after you've had a good sleep. Your memory is better. It boosts your creativity.
There are more benefits.
When you've done all that you can do and you've hit a brick wall, just sleep. I'm not saying you shouldn't work hard and all. I'm saying good sleep can help you work better and smart. It helps with clarity.
Cut down on a lot of other things that won't help you in any way. Reduce the time you use to watch movies. Minimize the time spent with people. Focus on what is important. And then sleep well.
Personally, I think that sleeping is a way of trusting God. When I have done what I need to do, I leave the rest to God. So when I close my eyes to sleep, I'm telling God, “I know you'll work things out for me. I know that when I wake you'll give me more clarity. I know that you'll renew my strength to run tomorrow. I know that all things are working together for my good.”
Rest. Be still and know he is God.
