BASILICA OF GUANARE, VENEZUELA

Erected on the site, historically mentioned, as the site of the second apparition of the Virgin of Coromoto, this basilica presents an imposing structure of Brutalist style designed by the architect Erasmo Calvini It was inaugurated in 1996 on the occasion of the second visit of Pope John Paul II to Venezuela.

In its distribution, the highlight is the main altar, conceived in the shape of a papal miter that culminates in a ribbed opening and incorporates a cross-shaped stained glass window at the top, which gives rise to a natural lighting of great beauty. The total ornamentation of the interior space is based on the play of light and shadows lavished by the 400 meters of stained glass windows that are part of the robust ensemble.

The building as a whole presents a colossal elevation that gives it special acoustic effects, which constitute a kind of spiritual metamorphosis in conjunction with the sacred music that permanently flows in the environment.
At the top of the temple was installed a viewpoint that allows the visitor the idyllic view of the temple through artificial lagoons, arranged for that purpose with function of mirrors, in the gardens. This viewpoint also allows to observe in the distance the beginning of the Andean mountain range, in its Venezuela section and even in clear nights, to visualize the reflections of the Catatumbo Lightning on the Maracaibo Lake.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Coromoto is of great value to Catholicism in Venezuela for the relics kept inside. It also has historical importance related to the first peaceful approach of the Venezuelan native with the European man, in times of the conquest and a great value from the architectural point of view for its volume, solidity and majesty, these aspects that give it its character as a place of tourist interest par excellence.

At the level of Latin America, it is considered the second most outstanding temple from the architectural perspective and for being the site of one of the only two relics, considered by the Vatican as authentic and original, left directly by the entity manifested in a Marian apparition.
