In the morning, you may have heard a rooster crowing. The rooster crows associated with the daily cycle. This daily cycle is known as the circadian rhythm.
It is a biological rhythm in animals, which follows the day and night cycle. The book 'The Story of 1001 Super Science Facts in the World' explains, the rooster crows because it has an internal clock that helps it in advance of the rising sun.
The crowing of the rooster at sunrise is actually a way to build up territorial power and start hunting for daily food.
When the rooster crows, it sends a signal to the other roosters that if they break, they are asking for a fight. However, if one neighboring rooster has the internal clock set a little earlier, this may invite the other roosters to crow earlier too.
Apart from being unique by crowing every morning, it turns out that chickens have the ability to see colors better than humans.
Researchers say color vision descends to structurally well-organized eyes. They mapped five types of light receptors in chicken eyes.
Researchers found that the receptors were placed in interwoven mosaics that maximized the chick's ability to see multiple colors anywhere on its retina - the light sensing structure at the back of the eye.
"Based on this analysis, chickens clearly outdone us in terms of color vision," said study author Dr. Joseph C. Corbo of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Joseph. Louis, Mo.
"The organization of color receptors in chicken retinas greatly exceeds that seen in most other retinas and certainly compared to most mammalian retinas," he explained.
