Indian police have arrested a French woman for making nude videos on a sacred bridge in the city of Rishikesh.
AFP news agency reported on Monday (31/8), the video taken on the bridge was uploaded on social media. The woman has violated internet rules in India and could be sentenced to up to three years in prison if convicted.
The suspension bridge over the Ganges is a very popular spot for tourists.
The woman was later released on bail and she told police the video was made to promote her jewelry business.
"Maybe in France things like this are not considered objectionable. But Rishikesh is a holy place and Lakshman Jhula is where (Hindu god) Ram, his brother Lakshman and his wife Sita cross the Ganges, "regional police chief Rk Saklani told AFP.
The woman who was arrested on Thursday has not been formally identified after police were notified of the footage.
“During the interrogation, he admitted that he had made a video without clothes on but he said he did not know it was illegal in India. He said the videos and photoshoots were to promote his beaded necklace business, "another police official told the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times.
The legal process in this case can take months.
