The sandpiper, or in English known as the "oriental magpie-robin" (Copsychus saularis), is a small bird belonging to the Muscicapidae family. This bird has a wide distribution in South and Southeast Asia, often found in various habitats such as open forests, plantations, city parks and gardens.

Physically, the male sandpiper has contrasting black and white feathers, with shiny black feathers on the upper part of the body and a white head and chest. Around the eyes are prominent white patches, adding to their visual appeal. Females have more inconspicuous greyish-brown plumage. In addition to differences in coat color, the two sexes also have differences in behavior and vocal characteristics.

Sandpipers are known for their beautiful and varied songs, often imitating other sounds around them. They are usually active in the morning and evening, looking for food on the ground such as small insects, worms and small fruit. During the mating season, males often engage in acts of attracting females by showing off their beautiful feathers and displaying interesting movements.

Apart from its physical beauty, the sandpiper also has symbolic value in the culture of several societies in Asia. In India, this bird is considered a symbol of love and freedom, often immortalized in poetry and art. In Thailand, the sandpiper is known as the national bird and is revered in local beliefs.

At an ecological level, sandpipers have an important role in the ecosystem as insect predators that can help control natural pest populations. Their presence in urban areas also shows tolerance for human habitats, although it should be noted that habitat destruction and urbanization can threaten their populations.

Overall, sandpipers are a fascinating example of Asia's rich biodiversity, not only in their physical and behavioral aspects but also in their role in human ecology and culture. Protection of their natural habitat is important to ensure their survival in the future.
