Lizards are carnivorous animals that are famous for their effective way of finding prey. They usually hunt in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler, making them more active. The way monitor lizards search for prey really depends on the species and the habitat where they live.

In general, monitor lizards use their excellent sense of smell to detect their prey. They often sniff out tracks or scents left by potential prey such as insects, small birds, or small mammals. Apart from that, monitor lizards also use sharp vision to find prey around them, especially in open habitats such as grasslands or deserts.

When approaching prey, monitor lizards use different strategies. Some species of lizard such as monitor lizards tend to be patient and hide in strategic places, waiting for prey to approach before they jump or creep up to catch it quickly with their strong claws and sharp teeth.

Meanwhile, smaller monitor lizards such as the little monitor lizard usually actively hunt by ambushing or chasing their prey at quite high speeds. They utilize their speed and reaction speed to catch smaller, more agile prey.

Overall, monitor lizards are efficient predators with a variety of hunting strategies they use depending on the species and environmental conditions in which they live.
