Hello all Steemian friends, I hope you are all healthy and fine. Today I am sharing an article about the differences between monkeys and apes, which are often confused.

Apes and monkeys are different, both physically and in their way of life, however, with more than 300 species of primates, the terms apes and monkeys are often used incorrectly.

An example of a type of mention that might be almost easy is gorilla as a type of monkey. It's rare to mistake a gorilla for a monkey. This is because gorillas are physically large and different from monkeys, which are relatively small.

So what are the actual differences between apes and monkeys? The following is quoted from detikcom.
Differences between Apes and Monkeys.

  1. Tail
One of the quickest and easiest ways to differentiate between apes and monkeys is to look for their tails. Apes do not have tails, whereas most monkey species do.

  2. Body Size
The second way to differentiate apes and monkeys is by body size. Apes tend to be larger than monkeys and usually have larger brains.
Physically, monkeys tend to have a skeletal structure similar to small four-legged mammals, such as cats and dogs, as explained in Wonderopolis.

  3. Movement in Trees
Uniquely, even though they both like living in trees, they both have slight differences in their activities. Generally, when moving through trees, monkeys run along the branches, while monkeys swing from branch to branch using their arms (or what is called brachiating).

  4. Apes Have Better Cognitive Abilities
Maybe you've heard that chimpanzees are one of the most intelligent animals, according to various studies. This chimpanzee is a species of great ape.

The intelligence of ape species is generally demonstrated by human-like behavior. For example, chimpanzees, which are genetically closest to humans, can make simple tools and use them effectively.

This also includes the established ways of communication of apes with their own group or with humans.

Meanwhile monkeys excel at using sounds and body language to communicate with each other.

What are the types of apes and monkeys?
Monkey species include baboons, marmosets, tamarins, and capuchins. In Indonesia, there are several species of monkeys, namely tonkeans, macaques, langurs, and Sulawesi black monkeys.

Meanwhile, ape species include humans, gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, gibbons, bonobos, and those originating from Indonesia include proboscis monkeys.

That's a brief explanation from me, hopefully it's useful for all of us. Thank you for reading and give as many votes as possible for your support, see you in the next post. Regards @im-steem
