It was informed in Tokyo that the Yamato Holdings and Japan Post companies will begin testing delivery robots on the streets of Tokyo, to initiate a move aimed at promoting unmanned robot delivery technology, as already exists in the US and China.
In the application of this delivery, there will be no direct face-to-face contact to reduce the risk of spreading the corona virus infection. It is also hoped that the application of robotic delivery technology can help logistics companies overcome the problem of worker shortages.
This unmanned robotic delivery model has been developed in the US and China, but in Japan this service has been hindered by regulatory hurdles. The robotics delivery trial will be held in eastern Tokyo, while the Japan Post will take place in the central part of the city. The trials will involve small, wheelchair-sized robots driving down public roads making deliveries. About five robots will be tested at each of the locations mentioned above.
The freight-forwarding robot is expected to be treated as a motorized vehicle and will be equipped with number plates that will operate within a 1 to 2 km radius, transporting packages to convenience stores, hospitals, apartment blocks and other destinations. The process of sending robots by online retailers in Japan such as Rakuten has been carried out in several places such as Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo. Rakuten also wants to use its robot on public roads to serve customers. It is hoped that the trial will continue until the end of the year and be followed by convenience store operators and gas stations that will make it easier for the public to take advantage of this service.
But unfortunately under Japanese law, unmanned delivery robots are not currently allowed to operate on public roads and the government is still in discussion with the private sector about changing the rules.
