Light weight, independent and modular components act in tandem to collect solar power and beam it to the ground using "inherently safe" microwave transmission. The modules are designed so that this transmission can be accomplished with no moving parts. The team is hoping for its first launch in 2022 or 2023 and large scale power delivery is still "years away".
High Earth orbit is a great place for a solar farm—the sun never sets and clouds never form. But to generate a meaningful amount of electricity, most past designs were unrealistically, and unaffordably, massive. Engineers depicted giant truss structures, usually measured in kilometers or miles, to which photovoltaic panels or mirrors were attached, absorbing or concentrating sunlight to convert to direct current, then transmit it to the ground via laser or microwave beams. Hundreds of rocket launches might be needed to build a single installation. It was technology too big to succeed.
"What was really required to make this compelling was to have a paradigm shift in the technology," says Harry Atwater, the Howard Hughes Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science at Caltech and a leader of the project. "Instead of weighing a kilogram per square meter, we're talking about systems we can make today in the range of 100 to 200 grams per square meter, and we have a roadmap for getting down to the range of 10 to 20 grams per square meter."

Here is a 2018 video with Pellegrino talking about their research. Pellegrino notes that the technology can capture 84% of the energy that is transmitted from space to the ground.

This work is moving forward at a fast pace but there are still many doubts about solar power generation in space for a number of reasons. Estimation efficiency of energy transport, More than 35,000 kilometers of geostationary from underground orbit, and the high cost of installing solar panels on satellites.

Thanks for the reply. You're right that there are definitely challenges involved in deploying this technology, and they might even prove to be insurmountable. Renewable technologies have been moving in fits and starts for as long as I can remember.

Currently solar energy is not active at night and cannot provide enough energy in bad weather. Due to which electricity cannot be used as per the demand. However, researchers are developing a solar system suitable for installation and use in space. Which will be free from the effects of the weather and will be able to produce and supply about 10 times more energy than the earth based solar panels facing the sun at all times. As a result, everyone will be interested in using space-based solar energy, meeting the demand for electricity.

Thank you for those observations. I agree that the space-based panels are advantageous because they can receive sunlight 24x7 and they can't be disrupted by weather conditions on the ground.

As long as no "public" funds are used, I'm all for it. It's certainly better than clear-cutting forests

According to the article, $100 million came from Donald Bren, one of America's wealthiest real estate developers. Not sure if they have any other funding sources.

There are subsidies likely in the mix then. Sad

I like how Eco-centric researches and scientific innovations are becoming lately. We need to utilize more renewable energy resources and less non-renewable ones.

I also like many of the renewable breakthroughs that have been reported. The key test is affordability, though. Cheap energy is needed in order to continue lifting large numbers of people out of poverty.
It seems to me that this space-based solar power is one that might have potential to be both renewable and affordable.
One thing I was wondering, though, is if we eventually launch these power collectors at large scales, would it create shade that cools the surface and changes climates in some regions? I have no reason to think it would be big enough to have that sort of impact, but I'm not sure.

There is a big potential in space-based Solar Power, especially with the potential reduced launch costs coming from SpaceX. Hopefully, more research and large scale demonstration projects will be getting funded.

Solar power is very potential in our energy sector. So it is very simple that we have to research a lot about solar energy.
