Yen often steps into the yard to bask in the sun and reflect on her life—a long and difficult journey that she walked with her head held high. Lately, she’s started forgetting what she did yesterday and sometimes mixes up the names of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The exact number of them often escapes her, but memories from fifty or sixty years ago remain vivid, as if they happened just a few hours ago.

Today, Yen thought back to those distant times, before she met Shi—her husband, with whom she shared 61 years, bore three daughters and two sons, and, sadly, had to bury three years ago. They were never wealthy, rather quite poor, working from dawn till dusk, but they were happy nonetheless.

Before she met Shi, a rich man had proposed to her parents, offering them ten cows in exchange for her hand. Her parents wanted to agree, but Yen didn’t love him. In the end, she ran away from home and soon met Shi. Yen never regretted choosing love over wealth. Yet sometimes she wonders how her life would have turned out if she’d yielded to her parents’ pressure and married that man. Would she have grown to love him, or would she have lived her life unfulfilled, never meeting her beloved Shi? She believes he’s watching over her now from the heavens, waiting for the day he can embrace her again.
