Solstice
I can't solve the conundrum
Of the sun;
Nor the sum
Of light and dark
With sticks
The way the ancients did.
But I can enter
The heart of winter
As I enter your heart
As I sense
The shortness
Of the tiny lives
We have.
I know darkness
Is coming
And sometimes
Sense it near,
Even on an afternoon
In winter,
There's a menace
To fear...
Even this close
To Christmas,
The darkest evening
Of the year.
