With all the advancement in technology, we sometimes feel that yesterday's version was better. You can see it in our common sayings too "Old Is Gold". But, is it really?
Something that I have noticed happening on multiple websites is, the refined search. I remembered few years back that YouTube's search is so powerful. It gets you exactly the results that you are looking for. But, with their updates, it is more of a refined search results to get their recommendation of videos and what they think you would like. Same thing has happened with "Related Videos" section. It does not show you related videos like before, it is more of recommended for you videos. To add to that, they try to first suggest previously watched videos.
Another example of that is Instagram, I remember Instagram's search was better than what it is right now. But, I guess there is little to be said about Instagram than YouTube. because, the former is a social media platform.
So, what really happened?
In short, the use of algorithms have advanced.
But, what is a social media algorithm?
It terms of computer science, it is the set of actions that locates data or identify an object.
How is that related?
The algorithms are there to make it easier for the platform that you are using to predict which posts/threads would interest you more. So, basically the input data will be your engagement with the content and your likes & dislikes and sometimes your friends' likes & dislikes.
Is it good?
Well, that is subjective. Personally, I prefer the older versions of both platforms. There are others which I did not mention. Because, I think that these are the most famous ones.
