I am not a fisherman but I have been fishing. I did not need a boat to do so.
It was a 5-minute walk to the riverside and I just cast the rod or leave a trap in the water. What was normal only back then (water close to my home) is unusual now. There is a river but to get there is quite a journey. I don't think it's worth going over there early in the morning to catch some fish. On top of that, fishing is no longer allowed without a fishing licence. A fishing licence is not cheap and to be honest, I find it pointless to buy one. It is not as if the fish stock is being controlled or maintained. Nor is the water in which people fish cleaned.
When it comes to cleaning up the water... I already pay water taxes and on top of that, there is also an annual tax of hundreds of euros for the water in rivers (lakes?) and probably the dykes, although hardly anything has been done about the dykes for years.
I have only been on a fishing boat once. Not to fish but just for fun. Let's say it was a tourist attraction. In the fishing village of Scheveningen (now incorporated in The Hague), you could go on a fishing trip. I thought that would be fun for the children (I mean me, of course). I can tell you I am an experience richer. And the children? They were seasick and can't remember anything about it and most of our trips and holidays.
