I always fought to live someone else's life since I am a teenagager. That doesn't mean I neve had a job I didn't see as the ideal one (I've been lucky most of my jobs were great and if I was fooled by the employer I left and had a new job at instant).
This doesn't mean my life was easy or I had a bed of roses since if you stick to your own rules and principles you make enemies but in the end it's me living with me, me who has to say: I lived the life I wanted or at least I tried hard even though it meant no one likes me because they can't use me.
If it comes to the autopilot, there's nothing wrong using it for a longer period or years. Everything we do automatically saves energy and gives room to think and make up plans, be creative while you earn an income.
Thank you for sharing such a personal and inspiring perspective. It sounds like you've faced your share of challenges but stayed true to your values, which is no small feat. I admire how you've prioritized living authentically, even when it meant making tough decisions or facing opposition. It takes a lot of courage to stick to your principles, especially in a world that often rewards conformity.
