It's 10:00 am and I've been here since 7:30, before anyone else has been here. The sixth floor is quiet when I arrive but now a good 40 people are present and I hear other representatives on phone calls as I stare at my two computer monitors while connected to the umbilical cord of a headset that will remain attached for the remainder of the day.
Hardly any light filters into the corner I find myself each work day. My desk has an array of snacks by my right hand, some healthy, some not so healthy. My bonsai tree and ceramic copper elephant statue sit stoically in the corner; an attempt at a peaceful scene to stare at when calls get stressful. Sometimes they work in centering thoughts when callers get angry that things aren't going their way. Believe me when I say I want them to leave happier than when they arrive on the line.
I stand and gaze out the window down to street level and watch cars stop at the light. The next call comes on my line and it's easy. I click the monitor and request ID cards. The monotony is broken up by breaks which I ration out to get me away from the desk. I walk in circles and greet coworkers as I pass and try to add steps to a sedentary job.
I pass a coworker answering a personal phone call in the hall and walk clear. Several coworkers cough as they work through various stages of the blight which came to roost on our floor. A large number of my coworkers are out sick with it, their desks sit empty testimony that we are short staffed.
January is tough every year. We put on work faces, clothes and attitudes and clock watch until lunch.
I return to my corner desk and spray on hand sanitizer. Life is glamorous here, I must admit!
