As Jack was making his way through the thick brush, he heard his friend Kaitlyn not far behind. She was struggling a bit through the last patch of bushes, so he slowed down. When she caught up to him, he asked, “How you doing?”
“Fine. We have to keep moving.”
So they did. The sounds of the woods around them moved to night sounds and the trees became cloaked in shadows.
“We must be getting close, no?” Kaitlyn pondered.
“At least another half hour,” Jack answered, mustering as much confidence as he could.
Actually, he wasn’t quite sure. But he was not about to admit that. So he kept pushing forward and Jill not far behind, working their way through the bush.
All of a sudden, they broke into a clearing. And they could see the sunset, fading above the trees. Their eyes scanned the perimeter of the clearing. And there it was. In the center, quaintly placed - their refuge for the night.
Then, out of nowhere, between them and the cluster of buildings, shadows loomed.
Jack’s eyes widened. He looked back at Kaitlyn and back at the shadows. They were definitely making their way toward them.
And then they were upon them. He didn’t even have time to scream. Dashing a glance back at Kaitlyn, she stood frozen, eyes bulging, unable to look away, surrounded.
“Kaitlyn!”
No response. She was gone.
