Reincarnation into a pig is not as he had imagined. Within 24 hours his tail was removed, and he only saw his mother through the bars of the enclosure. Bang. An ugly earring was shot violently into his ear.

The scream was deafening. What was the point of life, being locked up in a cage on a bare concrete floor that was hosed down daily?

The slaughterhouse is not the Valhalla we dream of grunted a pig.
He looked up and did not think twice while everyone was hiding, he stood on his hind legs. The fence supported his weight. Sacrificing himself was no sacrifice because he would be freed from the hellish misery that called itself a pig farm. In his next life, he would ask to be a wild boar rooting in the ground for truffles and chasing away intruders especially those humans daring to call themselves nature lovers entering his territory.
His face relaxed, he laughed and looked out through the bars as the slaughterhouse truck drove onto the road.
The landscape looked amazing and being a ham was not bad at all.

It's interesting. We take these animal conditions more or less for granted, but with a few tweaks the situation would turn into an incredibly fucked up horror movie. Like instead of piglets it's now adolescent humans hanging from hooks. Or sleeping in their own feces and being forced to cannibalize each other, even if it's "just" ground up bones. That's Texas Chainsaw Massacre type of stuff.
I still remember Baraka, that non-narrative documentary film in the spirit of Koyannisqatsi, and the part featuring the industrial sized conveyer belt. Or rather it feeding a never ending supply of baby chicks into what might as well could've been a wood chipper. You can't really compare animals to humans, but just think about the holocaust and audiences tearing up over Schindler's List. That shit happens every day and worse, but it's dumb animals and so most of us don't care. It's a nightmare, but here we are.
I'm somewhat of a hypocrite I guess, because I don't plan on becoming a vegetarian any time soon. I like my meat and eat lots of it. Always have. Still, these conditions are unacceptable and there are probably better, more humane ways of farming animals. Eating a little less meat might a be a good start though.
