Increased Metabolic Production of Oxalate.

Oxalate is produced as a metabolic product of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). About 10 mg per day are produced through this pathway, representing the majority of the endogenous oxalate production. This means that about 33% of the excreted oxalate results from the metabolism of ascorbic acid, taking into account that the average oxalate excretion is about 30 mg/day. People who take vitamin C supplements excrete more oxalates and form more kidney stones that people who do not.

The metabolism of hydroxyproline, glycine and glyoxal also generates oxalate. The metabolism of all these compounds accounts for 25% of all the excreted oxalate (average 7.5 mg). Hydroxyproline sources are mainly all types of meat.
