Various attempts to invent computing devices in prehistoric times are considered computer history. Today's modern computer was developed through constant research. The use of computers in Bangladesh began in 1964 at the then-Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Atomic Energy Centre, in Dhaka, East Pakistan. It was a 1620 series mainframe computer from the International Business Machines (IBM) company, the first computer in South Asia..
No one knew the use of computers then. After much searching, one was found who trained in analog computer programming. His name is Md. Hanif Uddin Mia. He is the first computer driver in Bangladesh. In the late sixties, Habib Bank installed the IBM-1401 computer, and United Bank established the IBM 1901 computer. Mainly these computers used for all bank accounts were third-generation mainframe computers.

Before the independence of Bangladesh, an IBM 360 computer was installed in the Bureau of Statistics. And at the university level of the country, the inclusion of computers in the curriculum of subjects like mathematics, physics, applied physics, electrical and electronic engineering, etc., started. Since 1972, large computers such as IBM 370, IBM 9100, and IBM 4341 have been gradually installed in the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
In a ceremony of the ICT department of Bangladesh in 2015, the first computer programmer of Bangladesh. Hanif Uddin Mia was awarded posthumously. The then Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhit presented this award to his son Sharif Hasan.

In 1987, the invention of an engineer named Mainul Islam made it possible to write the first Bengali on a computer. Later in 1988, Mr. Md. Mustafa Jabbar, director of Anand Computers, invented the Bangla Vijay interface. Vijay and Munir were notable among the early Bengali keyboards. In the interface method, the Bangla font and Bangla keyboard are connected to the computer's operating system, and Bengali is written on the computer by activating the keyboard and selecting the font. The Bijay interface was Macintosh-based and had limited users due to the high cost of Apple Macintosh computers, mainly used for publishing purposes.

In Bangladesh, the use of personal computers started in 2002. And the number of users of Bangla software increases in the daily work of various organizations and people. After Bijay invention came to the upgraded version of Bijay-2002, 2004, Bijay-21, and Bijay-52 through its upgrade. Currently, 95% of people in Bangladesh use Bijay's software. Moreover, now, there are many easy-to-use software in Bengali.

The information and communication technology (ICT) department was formed with the aim of speedy execution and modernization of all work through the use of computers in every sector of Bangladesh. In 2002, the name of the Ministry of Science and Technology was changed to the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology. April 30, 2011 AD to speed up the activities of the ICT sector. The Department of Information and Communication Technology was formed under the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology. December 4, 2011 AD. This department has been elevated to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. To make the speed of information technology development more rapid and integrated, the government on February 10, 2014 AD. The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications were merged to form the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, under which the Department of Information and Communication Technology and the Department of Posts and Telecommunications were formed. Bangladesh's government and senior policy-makers keen to keep pace with the changing modern world have played a major role in this country's transformation by realizing the importance of ICT. This change has added new impetus to the Department of Information and Communication Technology activities.
