INTRODUCTION

Due to advanced information technologies, in today's world data storage is not just a question of culture but a question of reliability and scalability. Centralized cloud storage services like Google Drive and Dropbox have been the popular solutions until now until outburst of issues related to data privacy, security, and centralized user data control comes in. Under such the current trend, a new breed of storage networks is emerging - decentralized storage networks.

A decentralized storage network is a network where individual users combine their resources and via blockchain or similar technology, save information or files in a distributed manner instead of single storage. These technologies safeguard user privacy and security by splitting data into segments, encrypting those segments and storing them at several sites. This way, control over the data is diffused so that no one person is in full control of it helping to mitigate attacks, spying and information leaks.

Decentralized storage networks are also emerging with Filecoin, Storj and Sia within their pack in the different perspective of data management. With these platforms, users are empowered to address their data management from a more open and secure perspective and at the same time help lessen the centralization of the internet.

  • INCREASED DATA PRIVACY AND CONTROL:

One of the major advantages of decentralized storage networks is the increased privacy and control it gives to users. In centralized storage systems, user data is stored on servers controlled by a single organization, which can access, modify or even sell this data without seeking explicit permission from the user; this poses serious questions on privacy and ownership of data.

In decentralized storage networks data is encrypted and also fragmented and spread across numerous nodes. No single node contains all the data and in most cases accessing such data without proper encryption key (remain in user control) is almost impossible. Basically, we provide ownership on this platform to users which was not the case for centralized storage system.

  • LOWER COSTS AND EFFICIENCY:

Decentralized storage networks are also cost-efficient. Traditional cloud storage providers spend a lot of money to build and maintain their enormous data centers, which requires a significant amount of resources and energy. The costs associated with this are usually transferred to users, making cloud storage expensive especially for enterprises or people who require large storage capacities.

Decentralized storage networks work differently, they use the excess storage capacity of computers around the world. In these network any users can offer their free storage space in exchange for compensation, so there is an opportunity to provide storage at a much lower cost and thus much cheaper solutions for users.

Also decentralized network allows to make much better use of resources. Data is stored across many computers (often with some redundancy), so any computer breaking down or being disconnected from the Internet doesn’t affect data availability. As well as not being limited by whatever specific hardware and software the one organization provides makes everything also more flexible and cheaper.

  • INCREASED SECURITY AND PROTECTION FROM CENSORSHIP:

Security is of a great concern in data storage, especially because the number of cyberattacks continues to rise. Centralized storage systems are usually very attractive to hackers because of the large amount of data stored in a single location, and when the system is successfully hacked, it leads to significant financial losses and privacy violations for it users.

Decentralized storage networks help to prevent these risks by distributing data across numerous nodes, which stores only a fragment of the overall data, so even if one node is compromised, the attacker cannot get access the full data without the decryption key. This makes decentralized storage networks more secure and resistant to hacking that the traditional centralized systems.

Also, in order to enhance security, decentralized storage networks offer protection from censorship. Unlike in the centralized systems where governments or companies can impose restrictions on data access or force providers to remove certain content, Decentralized networks operate on a peer-to-peer basis, which makes it difficult for any authority to censor or control the data stored in the network.

  • SCALABILITY AND REDUNDANCY:

Another area where decentralized storage networks excel, is in the area is scalability. In centralized storage systems, when the amount of data continues to grow exponentially, providers may struggle to scale their infrastructure and meet demand. However, decentralized networks can scale more easily by leveraging the combined storage capacity of individual nodes across the network.

Decentralized storage systems also offers redundancy. It stores multiple copies of data fragments across different nodes, in order to ensure that data remains accessible even if a portion of the network goes offline.

To achieve this level of redundancy is difficult in traditional centralized storage systems, where a single server failure can result in significant data loss. So this makes the decentralized storage system more reliable and future proof for both individuals and businesses.

CONCLUSION

The use of decentralized storage networks to store, secure, and access data, is a very significant innovation. It prioritizes privacy, security, and cost-efficient, thereby making it a compelling alternative to traditional centralized systems.
