We have to stop making bricks by destroying agricultural land and damaging the environment. The use of new materials and technologies that have been invented as an alternative to clay bricks should be increased. The departments of the government which are in charge of building and overseeing the infrastructure should come forward in this regard. These issues should be given priority to amend the Preparation of Bricks and Establishment of Kiln (Control) Act, 2013. These were the words of the speakers at the round table meeting organized by Prothom Alo and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) on Saturday. The meeting, held at the Prothom Alo office, was co-sponsored by the World Environment Fund (GEF) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). He said the number of brick kilns in the country at present is 8,930 and the demand for bricks in the country is 1.5 billion annually. To make these bricks, 128 crore CFT of soil is required, most of which is collected from the topsoil. From 2011 to 2015, the demand for bricks in the country is increasing at the rate of 2 to 3 percent. Rizwana said the brick-making sector is the country's largest source of greenhouse gases; The sector burns 2.2 million tons of coal and 1.9 million tons of firewood annually, which emits 6.5 million tons of greenhouse gases annually. He said that brick kiln in India is a serious environmental pollutant or red category industry and environmental impact assessment (EIA) has to be done to remove soil for brick kiln.

In Bangladesh it is still identified as less polluting or orange-b and no EIA has to be done to cut the soil. Raichul Alam Mandal, director general of the environment department, said Bangladesh is now working to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. As a result, we have to think about whether the brick kilns can continue as they are, taking soil from agricultural land, destroying the environment and damaging the health sector. He called for emphasis on the use of ready-made materials as an alternative to bricks in various government works. Mohammad Abu Sadeq, director of the Housing and Building Research Institute, in his presentation highlighted the use of a number of building materials as an alternative to bricks. According to the Seventh Five Year Plan, the use of clay for brick making is planned to be reduced to zero quota by 2020. Referring to the preparation of alternative brick materials with the sand raised from river excavation, he said that many tall buildings can also be constructed with these materials. Where there is no need to use any red brick in different parts including walls and roof. Asit Kumar Baul, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, said if the government started construction of a medium quality project with alternative bricks, it would encourage others as well. Sales will increase for those who are preparing alternative brick materials. As a result, private sector entrepreneurs will come forward to invest in alternative materials sector. Nowsherul Islam, senior vice-president of Bangladesh Auto Bricks Manufacturing Association, said, I have spent 60 crore rupees to set up that factory. But no one is buying that eco-friendly white brick. I became a criminal by obeying the government. Mizanur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Brick Manufacturers' Association, said, "We are ready to make bricks in a modern way by responding to the call of the government. But the government must first ensure that this method is canceled so that they do not repeat it later, so that bricks cannot be prepared in this way. In the future, we can make bricks with soil or not? If not, then there should be guidelines in law on whether bricks can be made using raw materials of other materials with the help of modern technology.Source
