Well we have been waiting a while now for the animated comedy "Big Mouth" to comeback from its beautifully crafted season 4 ending and go into more depth in what Walter White would call CHEMISTRY....the study of CHANGE. And boy do these kids go through the changes.....
Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg and Nick Kroll have the perfect combination of wit and wisdom through their incredible character cameos, hormone monsters and most importantly, the relatable high-school students. What I love about this show as it has developed over time to more than just a puberty fest of humour, dick joke/sex joke overload to make the average 16 year old laugh. It has tapped into something that Bojack Horseman did very well which is the study of mental health and behavioural change.
It is through characters like the Depression Kitty and Tito the anxiety mosquito (pictured below), Gratitoad and Cellsea where you see visual representations of different addictions and struggles in life that are obviously symbolic but are done eloquently and are super real without beating around the bush. The behaviours of these characters specifically are written unbelievably well and truly convey how this show is more than just its humour.
The hormone monsters are also fantastic. Giving those raw feelings behind each character that reveal the true intentions. Maury has been excellent since the pilot as well as Connie. Rick I don't like as much but has his moments alongside Tyler and Gavin. My favourite monster being Mona (Missy's monster) who is just so funny (also voiced by Thandie Newton) and converses with Missy so well as she knows EXACTLY WHAT TO SAY.
Lastly the kids. all of them so real, none of them feel fake and we can all remember kids from high school who were exactly like these kids. Nick the short, smart-ass kid who thinks he's funny and cool and is super duper smooth. Andrew with his textbook A-1 humour, hilariously embarrassing parents and unbelievable conversational abilities. Missy with her academic abilities and powerful values, a character I see with so much development to come as she transitions into more teen behaviour. Jessi, the smart girl who has soo much untapped potential to develop into this unbelievable human but can't handle the pressure of her parents. Jay with his endless charisma and bit-of-a-dick personality, Lola, Matthew, Coach steve (we all had a coach steve at school) and too many more to even mention.
SEASON 5 COMING UP REAL SOON. So many things to cover, Lola and Jay, Matthew, Nick and his battle with his reputation and behaviour, Jessi and her struggle with Tito, the Kitty and her parents, Andrew's quest for adventure and everyone else all compound to why this show is so saturated with so many great qualities and why I can't wait much longer for season 5.
