Review: The Rain | First Season

The Rain is a Danish series that is located in a post-apocalyptic context and that, without a doubt, you cannot miss and more if you like The Walking Dead, The Last Of Us or if you are waiting for the third season of Dark.

History.

The world as we know it came to an end. Six years after a devastating virus wiped out almost the entire population of Scandinavia through the rain, two Danish brothers emerge from the safety of their bunker and encounter the remains of a civilization. They soon join a group of young survivors and, together, embark on a dangerous journey through the region in search of a sign of life.

Without social restrictions, the group can be everything that is proposed; However, in the midst of the struggle for survival, its members discover that love, jealousy and many other human dilemmas are not a thing of the past, but still exist even in the post-apocalyptic world.

The story centers on two brothers, Simone and Rasmus, young people trying to survive in a society devastated by a rain that could end their lives. Their father left them locked up in an underground bunker 6 years ago to protect them, and an important mission: to take care of little Rasmus, who from the beginning we know is the center of history and the cure for such a disaster.

Of course this is not an unseen plot, a world after the destruction of a virus that threatens the few who are still alive. And, of course, a laboratory that with its experiments managed to cause such a disaster. But, despite being the typical apocalyptic story, it manages to fulfill its mission: to entertain.

Halfway to Perfection.

Like all productions, whether in theaters or on TV, it is not spared from making some mistakes. One of them is the situation of the brothers. After years of being locked in the bunker and without seeing the outside world for a long time, considering that they saw their mother die before their eyes in an unusual way, they do not present any type of serious trauma. In fact, they can be seen happy in no time. Perhaps it is a way to deal with losses on the part of the Scandinavians.

On the other hand, the series has a great positive point and that is that it manages to make the viewer feel empathy. As the episodes progress and without realizing it, we feel the same as the characters, who in a moment can be happy and enjoying a good rest, but in the blink of an eye they can be running, spending their lives.

But back to the other problems: everything is predictable. Not because we are already familiar with this type of stories, but because the script itself is responsible for providing us with all the information without having advanced so many episodes. In fact, in the pilot's first 20 minutes we already know that Rasmus is the cure, and that obviously takes a bit of intrigue out of the rest of the series.

Flashbacks are used frequently, and could even be said to be abused. It is another of its drawbacks, especially since in several of the episodes they decide to focus on a character and show us what his life was like before the "destructive" rain. Anyway, we didn't get to clarify the characters' stories very well.

Relationship with The Walking Dead.

Not only the fact that they deal with post-apocalyptic events makes The Rain and The Walking Dead similar. The characters going out into the world after being destroyed, the relationships of friendship, love and fights between a group that tries to survive and, probably the greatest similarity, the cannibal community that is practically equal to Terminus; everything leads us to think about the zombie series.

In fact, despite there being no undead, the enemy remains the same: man. Because both viruses were ultimately caused by the human race.

But not everything is the same. A point in favor of The Rain is that things move with accelerated speed, and due to its dynamics it is much more entertaining than The Walking Dead. Also, while she focuses on the characters during episodes to show us her past, she doesn't spend much time on each one. So the agile rhythm is a plus point.

Something that The Walking Dead does win is the sense of danger, the chances that a real weight character will die in the plot are much greater in the famous series of zombies. In the Danish series this does not happen and, in fact, the main characters very conveniently get rid of some situations in which the probabilities of dying in the highest, seem to be that they are protected by the "power of the script".

However, it is an entertaining series, which manages to fulfill what it promises without much else. As for the performances, they were practically actors that nobody knew, but who managed to fit well into their roles.

Regarding the visual effects and the soundtrack, Netflix has really done a very good job, and we expected nothing less. They are two of the great aspects to highlight, and in that it has not disappointed.

Conclusion.

What crucifies the series, without a doubt, is that it is predictable. But, despite this, it is still a good series that would fill some gap left by another. Best of all, they are short episodes, compared to the usual length of the series. Also, filler scenes are virtually non-existent, each adding something to the plot, and not boring at all. That is why, despite the points against The Rain, it turns out to be a series that fulfills the proposed purpose, which is to release.

Not a fan of The Walking Dead, and I haven't seen The Rain - but the fact that you compare the series and deem The Rain to be better, that is a fantastic comment in favor of The rain, considering that The walking Dead is a superpopular series nowadays!

Concerning the "coldness" of the Scandinavians:
"The Scandinavians are happy to be finished with the 1,5 meter distance regulation. Now they can finally return to their normal 5 meter distance."

The truth is that I don't like The Walking Dead either. I'm not done finding the sense of popularity that people say the series has. I just see it as just another series on the stack and that's it.

Hehe, I don't like that kind of series, so I haven't even started ;)
