The BFG review - an animated movie based on the Roald Dahl novel

The BFG is a quite famous childrens book written by the English writer Roald Dahl. He is an exceptional writer, and he has written many stores that have been taken to the screens later, for example Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Danny the Champion of the World, The Witches, Matilda, and so many others. Well, recently I read The BFG, and now I finally got the chance to watch the movie.

I have read quite a lot of reviews of the movie, and many of them are very critical. Some say it is one of the worst compositions of Steven Spielberg, while other people just say that it is boring. So, what is the truth? And what is The BFG about?

The BFG - Big Friendly Giant

The Big Friendly Giant is a giant who helps people dream sweet dreams in the night. But, he is surrounded by nine other giants who eat children at night. One night The BFG is discovered by Sophie, and as a result, he takes her captive so that she will not tell all the other human beings about him.

The BFG and Sophie become friends, and together they are trying to stop the remaining giants from eating more children worldwide. How can that be done? After all, even though BFG is a giant, he is only half the size of all the other giants.

The movie has some really nice effects and colors.

Is this really a boring movie?

I have got to say, I really wanted this to be a great movie. And in a way, it was. But, the story is developing slowly, and there are not so many scenes. As a result, you spend very much time at the same locations in the same scenario, making it quite boring. Of course, there are some very nice colors and effects, when you see the dreams the BFG has caught and how he keeps them in glassees, or when Sophie and the giant are out catching dreams at night. But, still - the nice effects doesn't make up for the slow pace of the movie.

I do believe that kids in general will like it, especially if they have read the book and want to compare the book version with the movie... but as an adult watching a movie, this was quite boring.

The highlight for the kids will for sure be the moment when the Queen of England tastes the special drink of BFG, in which the carbonated drinks make people fart (instead of burping). At least, my kids laughed a lot when they were farting in all directions.

Should I watch The BFG?

Go and read the book instead. And if you like it, go ahead and watch the movie. If not, you might want to give it a try, but be patient, and be prepared for a slow pace movie!

I found it on Netflix, but I do know that it isn't available on Netflix everywhere. You can also purchase it in the Google Play store, in Apple Store, and other similar service.
