It is clear that since its release on December 25, the new Disney / Pixar film "Soul" has attracted a lot of reactions.
I saw it twice, a first time in Spanish with my children and a second time by myself.
It is a simple and sophisticated film at the same time. His graphics are very attractive for the little ones who may not get the full message (my 5-year-old son likes the part of the Big Before and everything that is the souls, he tells them "spirits") but it is clear that he is dedicated to a larger audience.
The plot revolves around the jazz pianist Joe Gardner who has dreamed of being a musician all his life and who after achieving his great opportunity "falls into a sewer" and although he must go to The Great Afterwards, he ends up in the Great Before.
For me, the message that moves me the most and that I think can be lost sight of is that changing your life or mentality like Joe does, is not something that is given "at will", enjoying the little things of life. Life requires important inner work and above all it requires connection or regulation with someone else (what Joe does for 22 and vice versa). When we are children that co-regulation comes from parents but when we grow up it can be from family, friends or even a therapist.
There is a lot of mindfulness in the film but for me mindfulness is complementary to the healing process, often a "crisis" and many other tools (therapies) are needed. For Joe that crisis was death and what came next and for 22 he went to earth "by mistake." It is not a question of positive attitude, it is much more than that. We need to re-discover our connection with the universe and know we are part of everything. And we cannot do that alone or anything else wishing it.
