It is always interesting when Netflix releases brand new movies with big Hollywood stars. In one of their most recent releases, Ralph Fiennes plays the main role as Basil Brown as an excavator in the UK, just before World War II.
The Dig is based on a true story, and that always makes a movie more interesting. However, movies based on true stories often end up being boring, simply because the true story cannot be made as fascinating and as action-filled as one can when it is just a made up story with no foundation in reality. And, before we continue - a movie about archeology and digging... that can easily get boring? Have you ever seen people sitting with a comb trying to find something in the sand? It feels like they are sitting there forever, and then suddenly they find something that might be something? Based on that, I can easily imagine a movie like The Dig to be boring. But, somehow, I wasn't really bored while watching this movie, which makes me want to give honor to the director Simon Stone, and all the actors, and then especially Ralph Fiennes, whom I find to be an utterly amazing actor.
So, what is the movie about?
England is preparing for the Second World War. There are few resources, so as a lady wants to dig on her property to find something in what looks like it might be some old graves, they send Basil Brown to do the job. He has done work like this since his childhood, so even if he doesn't have the profession, he has the skills needed.
He starts digging, and when they discover something that might be a Viking ship, or maybe something even older, suddenly the nearest museum and also the British Museum shows up. But, so does the rumor of a near-lying war. The fact that the lady who owns the property has bad health also makes it a bit harder for everyone.
Interesting... but not the most exciting movie!
As I said, this could easily have ended up being a super-boring movie. It wasn't. But, it wasn't an adrenaline pump either. In order to make it a full movie, they had to bring some extra characters, including a married couple with trouble, where one wants more from the relationship, while the other yearns for someone else (who is of the same sex). Of course, this is most likely fiction, just to make it a movie, and not that interesting... but still, it has to be a part of a movie like this one.
All in all, I would say that it was a fairly good movie. I would never watch it again, but if you like dramas, then this might be a good source for some good hours in front of the TV. But, if you find it boring within the first 30 minutes, turn it off and find something else instead (it will not get more interesting along the way)!
My score: 6/10
Have you seen The Dig? How did you like it? I would love to hear from you!
