INTRODUCTION Hello my fellow steemians? How are you doing?. It's my pleasure to share with you guys what drug abuse really means, the causes, the effects and how we can protect ourselves from it because when one is addicted to drugs, the person can't resist the urge to use them no matter how much harm the drugs may cause.

MEANING OF DRUG ABUSE
Drug abuse simply means the illegal drugs or the use of prescribed drugs in a way or for the purpose other than those for which they are meant to be used or in excessive amount.
CAUSES OF DRUG ABUSE

1. Peer pressure: This is a strong factor in starting to use and misuse drugs, particularly for young people who use drugs due to the pressure they feel from friends and even family members.
2. Social media: Many friends and family members show pictures of using substances in social media.
3. The influence of culture and society
4. Curiosity
5. The desire to be themselves, depression, stress, inability to cope and low self-esteem.
   EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE
   Substance abusing youths are at higher risk than nonusers because a use if drugs leads to mental health problems, personality disorder, suicidal thoughts, attempted suicide, violence, crime, financial problems. It can as well damage some parts of the body such as brain and lungs. It can also lead to imprisonment, damaged relationship and even death.
   HOW TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM DRUG ABUSE
   Parent's roles include
   •know your teen's activities
   •Establish rules and consequences
   •Know your teen's friends
   •Keep track of prescription drugs
   •provide support
   • Set a good example.
   Youth's or Teen's roles include
   •Surrounding yourself with friends who don't use drugs
   •Knowing how to resist temptation.
   •Distracting yourself with activities like exercise and listening to music.
