Animals that chew the chord are numerous, but I will use one of them to explain why they do so. Let's use a cow as a case study.

A cow has a set of sharp teeth in front of its lower jaw, which enables it to bite grass easily. If you've ever noticed a cow eating grass on the field, you would discover that it takes a small bite at a time. This way of eating is called nibbling

So the cow first nibbles the food with the sharp front teeth and swallows it instantly.

As humans, we have only one compartment in our stomach, but the cow has four.

But wait. Did you know some human being also chew the cud? Wao!

That exclamation isn't amazing. It's disgusting, but hey, it's not abnormal. However, a few people do that.

Cow is a herbivore. It eats grass. It is also a ruminant animal

When a cow nibbles, it first goes to the first compartment. The food stays there until the cow is ready to really eat. Whenever we see the cow or other ruminant animals nibbling, they are only gathering food they would eat later into the first compartment

When it's time to eat, you would notice that they chew while sitting and relaxing. That's the time they eat.

Let's see the science behind their behavior

The cow and other ruminant animals have four compartments.

  1. Rumen (paunch)

  2. Reticulum (honeycomb)

  3. Omasum (manyplies)

  4. Abomasum (true stomach)

After the unchewed food goes through the mouth and the esophagus, it stays in the rumen which is the first and the largest compartment

When the animal is resting, it brings out the food back to its mouth and chews properly. The food brought back to the mouth is called cud, that's why they are called animals that chew the cud. After chewing the cud, the animal swallows it and it passes through the second chamber (Reticulum) to the third compartment (omasum) and to the last which is the abomasum

The abomasum is just like the human stomach where the necessary nutrients are gotten from the stomach

That is where the nutrients from the food we eat release the nutrients to the body through different means. So the animal gets the nutrient from the abomasum

Some of the animals that chew the cud are

Why human chew the cud

As earlier discussed, some humans also chew the cud though they have only one compartment different from the herbivorous animals. I've seen a couple of people regurgitating. Many people that regurgitate see it as a normal thing, but it's not. It happens as a result of Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). When there's acid reflux in the stomach, there would be irritation, and this causes some of the food in the stomach to flow back to the mouth

Human being's digestive system is not designed to bring back food to the mouth after swallowing it (regurgitate). If this happens, it's not normal

So if you have a friend or anyone around you regurgitating, advise them to visit the doctor for a prescription.

Woow...I have learnt o. See regurgitate is not normal.... didn't know this earlier on. God is great o

Yes o. Many people regurgitating think it's a normal thing but it's not. Although it doesn't have a severe effect, it's disgusting. Thanks for the comment @queensleey. One love

That's true o. It happens to me especially when I eat meat...or any food I find difficult showing or that's hard to chew. I have learnt to top and seek doctor's help
