Poliomyelitis is an infectious viral disease which can cause paralysis when it invade the nervous system and can usually be transmitted through contaminated food and water, fecal oral contact,
Sneezing or coughing.
Poliomyelitis was first discovered as a distinct condition by Jacob Heine in 1840 and in 1908 Karl Landsteiner identified it as a causative agent there by identifying it as a virus ππππππππππ.
The virus has existed thousands of years as an endemic pathogen quietly ravaging the health system of mostly young children and adults causing paralysis and crippling thousands of people even death.
The virus grew to epidemic taking claiming lives and have thousands of people crippled which lead to the fast track of a possible vaccine that'll help eradicate such a deadly virus. The quest on creating a vaccine was accomplished in 1952 by Jonas Salk and ten years later Albert Sabin developed another vaccine which both aid in reducing the number of infected persons from hundreds of thousands to a few thousand infected people given hope for possible eradication. With this I hope you've gotten a clue of how deadly the virus can be and the measures taken to get rid of it. But one thing is setting, you mustn't allow it to get to you before finding a means to cure it, preventive measures is always the best. I'll help us with the signs and symptoms attached with this virus and the precautions we can take to avoid it or possible means of getting rid of it.
Paralysis and numbness is the main symptoms of poliomyelitis though many who are infected with this virus don't usually become ill but most times as report say that 2-10 out of 100 of the affected person usually die due to damages cause by the virus to the muscle that helps them in breathing thereby leading to the death of the affected person. Other symptoms include Fever
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Vomiting
- Fatigue
- Back pain or stiffness
- Neck pain or stiffness
- Pain or stiffness in the arms or legs
- Muscle weakness or tenderness.
The numbness that usually comes with a feeling of pin or needles in the leg or arms most times seize the flow of blood from other parts of the bodies to the leg.

Poliomyelitis can be prevented with the use of vaccines and because of this the WHO has taken it upon itself as a body to provide immunization to the masses against the spread of this virus.
The vaccines which is divided into two, OPV (oral polio vaccine) and IPV (inactivated poliovirus vaccine). As a child I can remember taking the vaccines and had my finger tick with marker to show I've been immunized. This aidsa lot as it was a means to minimize the outbreak of the virus.
As said earlier poliovirus don't have a cure but has possible means of preventing it and also some health management system which can be of relieve to the affected.
- Fluids (such as water, juice and broth).
- Heat to soothe the muscles.
- Medications that relax the muscles, also called antispasmodic drugs.
- Pain relievers, such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
- Physical therapy and exercises to help protect the muscles.
Rest. - Mechanical ventilation, or a machine that helps you breathe.
It's always better prevent a disease than seek a cure for it. Good nutrition as this will enhance your immune system to fight against any disease that come in contact with your body, proper health management, clean environment with good water will go a long way to curb the spread of this virus. For parents who have children below the age of five, they have to insure that the children get vaccinated cause their more vulnerable to the virus at that age.
