Ben Carson as he is popularly called was termed the dumbest kid in the school while in his fifth grade, not until his mother challenge him and his brother with reading and writing in addition to their schoolwork. Ben developed a new found interest in learning and further got scholarship to Yale University, where he received a bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1973. He then attended the University of Michigan, and earned a medical degree in 1977, and later Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland.
Family Life
Benjamin Carson was from a family of four, he, his brother, mother and father. They were a happy family until his mother discovered that his father had another family and filed for a divorce and left with he and his brother. Things were not easy as she was left alone to fend for the two boys. She did a lot of menial jobs and always came back tired. But when she got to know of how Ben and his brother spent their days she made it a point of duty that they watch two shows in a week and will give a report about it. She also made sure they read one book each week and also give a report at the weekend. He met his wife Candy Rustin when he was in Yale and they got married in 1975 and had three children.

Career Achievements
In 1984, after a brief time as a senior registrar in neurosurgery at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, part of the Queen Elizabeth II medical center in Nedlands, Western Australia, Ben became a director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. He was one of the youngest doctor at that time to earn such title. He also held other professorships in plastic surgery, oncology and pediatrics at Johns Hopkins. He was the first neurosurgeon who performed the first successful separation of conjoined twins who where attached together at the back of their heads. The operation which took place i n 1987 lasted for about 22hours and had a 70 - member surgical team. He also led a team of South African and Zambian surgeons in a separation of two twins conjoined at the head.
He later moved into politics where he served as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, under the presidency of Donald Trump and stepped down in January 2021.
Other Activities/ Awards
In 1994 Ben Carson cofounded the Carson Scholars Fund, an organization that awards scholarships to students who had demonstrated academic excellence and community service.
He also received numerous awards during his career including the 2008 Presidential Medal of Freedom, given to him by US President George W Bush. He is also the writer of many books like think big and gifted hands.
