Introduction
Once more welcome to @prolee's blog, I'll be lecturing us on the topic Peer Pressure.
Without much hesitation, I'll be making my content in respect to the following outline;
• Meaning Of Peer pressure.
• Why it's common.
• Examples of peer pressure.
• How can one handle peer pressure?
Meaning Of Peer Pressure
Peer Pressure is the direct or indirect influence of an individual or group of individuals by another individuals in the same social group to engage in activities they might otherwise not want to be involved in.
Peer pressure is very certain regardless of age since it revolves around one's social circle. A child or adolescent can experience a peer pressure from his classmates, a young adult or youth can experience pressure from co-workers, even an adult can experience pressure from his friends, spouse friends or in-laws. So as one gets old you tend to also have a peer pressure that suits your age.
Peer pressure can be of various types, I'll be listing few, check them out..;
- Positive Pressure
- Negative Pressure
- Spoken Pressure
- Direct Pressure
With the above types it can be deduced that one can be influenced to do the right thing also. So not all the peer pressures are negative.
Why it's common
Many persons mostly adolescents try to fit themselves in a group of persons they admire or want to mingle with, at times they don't want to be mocked by their mates so they join them. Some adults feel they'll be ignored by those in the same working place or company with them so they tend to join the reigning group.
Even in media, some persons are influenced by what their favourite artist do. They want to meet up to every activity such person is involved in. Several persons are curious in doing something new they find others doing. All of these behavioural adaptations gives few reasons why Peer pressure is very common in the society today.
Examples of Peer pressure
The examples of peer pressure I'll be listing below are based on Positive and Negative peer pressures.
Negative pressure
- Pushing someone into smoking or alcohol taking
- Someone influenced by his/her friends to involve themselves into sexual activities
- A young adult who wants to feel among the reigning group and has to join their cult group
- A female who gets influenced by her friends to join prostitution.
Positive pressure
- A child who takes education serious because his best friend does.
- Someone who learns to speak good English fluently since he wants to join the best group in school so he has to learn it.
- A child who learns to greet his elders after watching other good kids do same.
How can one handle peer pressure
Peer pressure can be a problem when it's a negative one but when it's positive there's no problem with it. So if there's any aspect to handle Peer pressure, it should be the negative aspect we'll be discussing about. Check out few things we need to consider that would help us in handling peer pressure;
- You should always have excuses. When those influences comes you should have a ready response to those persons who wants to preach to you to do those negative activities.
- Always listen to your inner self. If you don't feel alright in a particular situation don't involve yourself or let yourself be carried away.
- Stay close to those persons who reason same with you. It really helps so that when you're saying "no" to a particular situation and you have other persons around you saying "no" too it builds your courage to fight negative peer pressure.
- Another important part of it is that you should have a good adviser or mature adult you can go to as a Youth to seek advice from whenever you find yourself in a tempting situation.
Conclusion
As we've discussed peer pressure can be good only if positive but when negative it's then a problem. Many persons are into illegal activities today because they want to fit in the reigning group. So it has served as a major source to various illegal activities in the society today.
