meaning of democracy

in my own understanding this is a system of government which brings the government and the citizens closer and also make a country live in unity it is a form if government which also protect the interest of the minority
democracy is can also be define as a form of government in which the people exercise through their govering power or through representative elected by them the origin of democracy was gotten from a Greek word demo which means people and kratia which means government also through Abraham Lincoln it was defined as government of the people by the people and for the people

Types of democracy

1.Direct or classical democracy:
this is where all citizen attend the the assembly and take part in decision making in order to give the state or society.this type of democracy was praticed in the antient small Greek city state.

1.Indirect or representative democracy:in this type of democracy the citizens through election,elect those who will represent and govern the state on their behalf.
these type of democracy replace the direct democracy in modern state no more possible to everybody to govern the state as the result of large size and population of the modern state.

Features of democracy

• Regular and periodic election
• Equality before the law
• Free and fair election
• Existence of party system
• No intimidation of voters during election
• Guaranteeing fundamental.human right
• There must be an independent judiciary
• There should be press freedom
• The principle of rule of law is observed

Merits of democracy

• Encouragement of contitutionalism
• Individual right are observed
• There are freedom of expression of speech
• Free and fair election
• Supremacy of the law
• Equality before the law

Demerits of democracy

• It is expensive to operate
• Corruption and manipulation of election
• It pays attention to quantity rather than quality.
• It is low at decision making
