The things to start collecting now, to earn a lot of money later...

We would all quite like just a little bit more spending money, and most of us have stuff in the house we are no longer using and really should be getting rid of. Well it turns out if you're collecting the right thing, it could be worth more than what you originally paid for...

Whilst most items lose value as time passes, there are certain products, like vintage toys and handbags, that are worth significantly more now than when they were first released. The key is to find rare items that received a limited run.
With research and enough disposable income, you too could begin collecting stamps, coins, and even trainers in relatively little time.

So just for shits and giggles, I have actually done some research and can reveal seven of the easiest items to start collecting, that I feel are most likely to increase in value as years go by.

Vintage handbags

You might be surprised by how many people donate old designer handbags to charity shops or sell them for cheap at car boot sales and online auctions. Keep an eye out and you could find a number of treasures for a reasonable price, that you can sell at a later date for a profit. Some vintage Chanel handbags are worth housands of pounds, for example!

Childhood toys

The truth is nostalgia sells, so some vintage and retro toys can make a great investment. Adults are willing to pay high prices to recapture some of their treasured childhood memories. A range of toys hold tremendous value now – from Barbies and Lego, to train sets and action figures.

Contemporary art

It almost goes without saying, but investing in upcoming artists now could be profitable later and although this is something I know very little about, a small bit of advice would be to buy something you like the look of... So at least, if it looses all its value, you will still have something nice to look at.

Books and comic books

Scour your shelves and attics to see if you have any first edition books or comics that come with a hefty price tag. Keep in mind that firsts are always worth more; the first time a character is featured or a #1 of an issue will almost always be valuable.

Stamps

Stamps almost always increase in value and the better the condition, the better the price. Stamps that were probably only purchased for pennies originally can now bring in impressive sums of money, especially if they’re in mint condition.

Coins

Numismatics (coin collectors) remain one of the world’s most avid group of collectors. The most valuable coins are extremely rare, have errors on them, or are part of a collection. Try to invest in coins with low mintage figures, or coins that are a part of a continuing series. Once a collection becomes desirable, earlier coins in the series will always fetch a premium to complete the sets.

Trainers

There is a massive resale market for trainers, but not every trainer is going to be a collectible, so the ones you should look out for most are limited edition styles. Hold onto them and the price will soar. Even gently used trainers can earn big bucks.

Now, it should be said that the price for a collectable usually depends on how many of the same item are available, as well as its overall condition. Bear this in mind before any purchases are made. Depending on where you find a certain item, you could turn it around pretty quickly and earn a substantial profit. If you find a vintage handbag in a charity shop, for example, you could be earning big bucks in no time.... But for others, you’ll likely have to wait some years to see a considerable profit, as certain items will become more valuable, the older they are.
