The visible lie

House hunting in Lagos is one of the most difficult and greatest challenge I’ve ever faced. Would you believe that I was in search of a house for over eight months before I finally got one? And the one I got isn’t really the best but manageable and still better than the rest.

Finally, I got my apartment and wanted to paint it. It’s a new area and I barely know anyone there. Since I didn’t know anyone, I went to see the guy who took me to that house and the first person I knew in that area. To my surprise, he’s also a painter. That makes it then and I took him to the apartment so that he was going to see the part that needs scraping, screeding and every other fault the house has.

After he checked it all round, he gave me a bill of one hundred and fifty thousand naira and I didn’t even think twice because I trusted him. He listened the materials he was going to buy but to be sure, I went elsewhere to price those materials and they were the same price.

Immediately, I sent him a hundred thousand naira to buy the materials and I was going to balance him the fifty thousand naira which was for his workmanship immediately he’s done with the job.
I gave him the key to the apartment because I wasn’t going to be around but when I got to the apartment, it was something different entirely. He did a very bad job and started to call me to pay him his workmanship fee.
I asked him to paint everywhere with Satin and that was the paint money I gave him but he didn’t use Satin paint at all.

I felt really bad for trusting him and after my findings and what I learned from his apprentice, he didn’t buy all of the materials he was supposed to buy.
Also, he kept about fifty thousand naira for himself out of the material funds I gave to him.
I felt bad. I gave him his workmanship fee but I made him realize that I saw all that he did but do not want to make it an issue.

What I have learned from it

Don’t trust people. I trusted him and that’s why he was able to dupe me that much. Secondly, I feel it is always better to buy all materials for the workers so that cases like this won’t occur. I wonder how many people would have gotten scammed this way also.

Lastly, your reputation matters a lot. I can never invite that guy to work for me anymore and even if I see someone who wants to give him a job, I can convince the person not to.
That’s how I can be.

I’d love to read stories that my friends will write too. I’d be inviting @ninaa04 @nsisong2022 and @wuddi.

Thank you for the invite, I have already shared my story.
Finding apartment in Lagos is the Most tideous and difficult thing, you need to wise up or else those guys will use you and shine.
My friend who went to Lagos stays in her company lodge had a better offer of job in another place but couldn't accept because of accomodations.
For the guy who thinks he's smart to use inferior materials to do the work for you and also pocket some part of the money, I want to say that one good turn deserves another,he will meet trouble elsewhere and he will pay double of what he dupe you.

People fail because they are not truthful.

Abeg wise up, Lagos is not a place for fragile and dull moment.

Woww.. very interesting!
