INTRODUCTION

International women's day is a day that women all over the world are celebrated. Women have played great roles in history and deserve to be appreciated and celebrated. They have contributed physically, politically, economically, culturally and otherwise. March 8 is always a day set out specially to celebrate women. And the official title of this year's women's day is 'Invest in women: Accelerate progress'. While the campaign theme is #InspireInclusion'. The celebration of women through women's day started in February, 1909. Purple is the colour for international women's day.

The Girl Child today becomes a woman tomorrow

Before one becomes a woman, one has to be a girl first. In some societies, the girl child is looked down on and seen as being insignificant, a second class citizen. The girl child is denied some rights and privileges, sometimes not sent to school or sent to a lesser school, denied education and married off at a young age. The girl child is voiceless, but it is that woman who isn't celebrated or appreciated that carries the child in her womb for nine months, she makes sacrifices just to make sure the child gets educated. A woman never forgets her family, she goes as far as putting her life on hold for her family. It is often said that if you train a make child, you are training just one person, but if you train the female child, you are training the whole society. Why? Because she will give back to the society hundred folds of what you gave her which is education and establishment. If you want development immediately, invest in a woman.

Women as Victims

Women are victims of the rage of men in the society. They are molested even as a girl child, raped, sexually harassed. We rarely hear that a man was a victim of human trafficking, but every year, women are victims of human trafficking, child labour, manual labour etc. Sometimes even as the girl child or woman tries to speak out, the society shuts her up and makes her feel as if she is at fault. The uneducated woman lives in fear of what people will say, the educated ones are called feminists because they try to speak out. Unfortunately, women everywhere in the world are sexually abused, looked down on, treated like the lesser gender, discriminated against, raped etc and when a woman tries to speak up, she is shut down by men and even other females. A woman who tries to exercise her rights and who frowns at the ills in the society is termed a feminist and said to be unsubmissive. In Nigeria and other countries, women make up less than 6 percent of the parliament. Women are the ones taken into sexual slavery.

Invest in women: Accelerate progress

The theme of this year's women's day is'Invest in women, Accelerate progress'. Anyone who invests in a woman will see progress happen immediately. If the society puts in the energy they put in when investing in men into investing in women, we will have society where there is peace, progress, success, industrialisation at large.

Women should be invested in through education, skills training, empowerment, all these are never wasted.
Violence against women and the girl child should be severely frowned out and people should be punished for it. Women should be encouraged to contest elections and even men should vote for them.
Women should be given equal opportunities with men in different fields ranging from science, technology, ICT etc.
Women like Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Dora Akunyili, Stella Adedevoh who died as a result of trying to prevent Ebola virus from spreading, Rosa Parks, Mary Slessor, Queen Amina of Zaria who fought and sacrificed for civil rights movement were not celebrated enough for what they stood for.
Let's celebrate women for their values talents and sacrifices which has helped shape the world today.
Women do not keep silent when they see things go wrong, rather, they are always pushing for change, culturally like trying to stop female genital mutilation, economically and socially like Ngozi Okonjo Iweala who represents women globally. She was the first woman and the first African to serve as the world's top trade official.
Women shouldn't be silenced by the men and society when they try to speak out, rather they should be encouraged.
The perfect way to celebrate women and in today's world is to encourage and guide them, rule out gender inequality and never take advantage of their compassionate heart.
The society should invest in women by encouraging them to aim high, never talking down on them, never telling them they can't achieve something because they are women. A woman can achieve anything she sets her mind and heart to do but sometimes, negative words from the society can marr her chances.

Hola amiga

Saludos
