Power Up Friday: WK1 -How much must I tip?

in hive-168072 •  7 months ago

Believe it or not… Here I am with a powerup post!

Well, I suppose I asked for it. I half and half challenged our friend @wakeupkitty to take part in this contest.

My words to her: “How about both of us participate? I don't think we've taken part in the same contest."

Her reply: A post!

Umh… I could not let this go past me.

Okay, I can do a powerup, but what tips do I share with Steemians on a late Friday night?

The word tip is such a small yet powerful word. It has so many different meanings, like the tip of my nose, to tip something over, a tip as in advice, and my favorite, to tip someone for what he OR she has done.

Long, long ago, when I was still a restaurant owner and my children were teenagers, I gave them one of their first lessons in life. They had to choose between earning a set amount as pocket money or being waiters.

I don’t think you will get this one wrong. Yip, they wanted to be waiters.

As waiters, they quickly discovered that there are four ways of making money.

  1. You earn commission on what you have sold
  2. You get tips from your customers… Well, if your service was good
  3. You make other waiters pay you for taking their shifts
  4. You sell your staff meals to friends. This was my daughter’s brainwave

As the weekend is ahead and some of us will be eating out, need a car watch to look after your car, or need someone to help us load our shopping into our cars, tipping is the order of the day.

The million-dollar question is, how much must I tip? Well, how long is a piece of string?
Some will tell you 10%, while others will tell you 20%. It all depends on the type of service, your financial circumstances, and, believe it or not, your mood.

Today I am sharing some “tipping” tips with you.

  • Tip what makes you feel comfortable
  • Ask yourself: If it were you, what tip would you have expected?
  • Always keep in mind that those with low wages are often the ones earning tips
  • Set yourselves a starting percentage, like 10%, and then increase it according to the service you received
  • Always tip in cash. Most establishments will only pay the staff their tip earnings at the end of a month, and so often, their tips are what put food in their tummies.
  • Don’t tip when you are in a bad mood. Give the bill to our partner, and let him tip.
  • I don’t do "share tipping" as I doubt very much that the tips are shared fairly. The necks of the jars are often just too wide. Tip the person.
  • Don’t be shy to add to the tip that someone else is leaving.
  • Don’t complicate tipping. Do it because you enjoy it.

Now I wonder. How much are you going to tip me for these tips?

Time for the second half of this contest, my powerup.

We do not tip. Years ago there was a discussion and 'they' decided a tip is an insult. The wages are high enough and waitresses aren't beggars.
Some do (again) these days but in the menu you will find written tips are included!

If you go to the shop no one will carry your groceries to your car or bike. It's DIY girl or take the shopping cart to your car and bring it back. At times people take it home (you put 1 euro in it to use it).

So no tips, it's not in the culture and cash will soon be banned! No tips for the homeless either!

If tips are accepted the employers have to give it to the owner or put it in a piggybank. Some share it with the employers, many owners keep it to fill to get their finances in order ( creative bookkeeping).

So don't scold if Europeans don't tip since it's not a habit. Many are raised with the idea that no matter what they do it's always wrong, they treat others like slaves and they humilate proud people if they give a tip. The downside is most are scammed, manipulated and pay the jackpot just because the idea is they must be filthy rich.

Great you joined dear friend, I love those smart kids. A creative mind is always good for the business.

Btw If I have to pay 10% on top of what I've already been charged I would never go out again. Not that I do since the average drink, food and service is terrible.
Those who shop online and get delivered already pay unless they buy for a certain amount (depends on the shop).

Is it my turn again?

❤️🍀

Sorry my friend!
It's been a busy couple of days and I am still trying to catch up.

In other words you are telling me that we are spoiled in South Africa. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Ons praat gou weer.
Lekker doeks!

I can relate with this post a lot because I was once a waiter in a big hotel and sometimes our tips outweighed our salary.

But there is something I noticed about business in hospitality management… once they realize that you stand the chances of getting tips every now and then, the salaries are always poor compared to others… I can’t tell for other countries but it’s very common in Nigeria.

Oh yes! I can remember you working in a hotel .

Tips in South Africa are also much higher than the wage, which is such a pity. I think you have nailed the reason for it. Establishments know they can get away with low salaries, even with a set minimum wage.

How I wish they get nailed for it!

Gracias mi estimada @patjewell por la invitación, claro que si me sumo a participar en esa dinámica gracias.

Oh yes!!! 🤛

After your comment I cannot help but to wonder where AI will fit in with waitering... umh.
