Tell your story #32-- My country and the systems I have come to witness

in hive-168072 •  6 days ago  (edited)

The last time I got involved as a patriotic citizen, I almost regretted that very aspect of my patriotism to my country.

Let’s be real here. Democracy is meant to be a government of the people by the people and for the people. That’s what my country practices.

But as I grow older, I realise that we are only made to believe a practice that has no deep systems rooted in its philosophy.

My finger ready to cast a vote

I went out some time last year to cast my vote for a candidate I wanted as the leader of my local government.

When the result was announced, I noticed that although some people complained bitterly against the popular opposition party, it was shockingly the party that won the election.

As I sat back in the tricycle I took home, I could not understand why some things were merely beliefs without a clear action to back it up.

When I got home that evening, I promised not to ever participate in anything that had to do with the governance of my country. Not because it was not possible to, but because I didn’t see my input yielding any fruits.

Recently, I got to know that there’s a lot of things going on in life, and we often criticise what we see instead of stepping out with our own initiatives.

People casting their vote
I decided there and then that no matter how my voice was little or unheard in the society, I could still make some time to add my own values and give my perspective about life.

This would build up over time, and whether I’m convinced that it’s getting enough visibility or not immediately, it would someday be a person’s reason for seeing life differently.

In this era of social media and influencers almost dictating what we should adopt as trends, I could build up something that will also serve as a pathway if I remain determined, focused, and consistent with what I had to offer.

So, no matter how the governance is, my vote still means something. And no matter the noise in the media, someone is seeing what I put out there.

The difference between trying and not trying is in the efforts made.

This is what I could draw form my story last year, and this story will be a part of me for a longer time. This is so because it shapes my perspective on who I am, and what I’m meant to bring to the people.

Would like to invite @mcgrady, @josepha and @chiomi to participate in this contest.

The cons of democracy!
I believe the originators of this system of government felt it was useful to society. While it guarantees human freedom and gives us the opportunity to exercise our fundamental human rights, particularly the right to vote and to be voted for, it still leaves a lacuna open.

With democracy, anyone can easily rig elections. All you need is a sweet tongue and wads of notes. Once you are able to stuff the right pockets with enough "something for fuel," you can panel beat the system into whatever you wish.

It's a burning shame that we still witness this level of unprofessionalism.

Do not embrace apathy, Yhudy. Keep pushing. You'd get there.

Thanks for your beautiful words, @ukpono.

This is coming from the place of authority. You'll help us experience what true democracy is when you get there, right?

The apathy mindset is in the past now. I keep pushing for what's better.

It has always been a normal situation in Nigeria, the person alot of people will vote won't become the winner. The bad leaders are currently happy and enjoying power but they don't know that nothing lasts forever.

You voted for someone and the opposite became the winner when it was obvious that alot of people voted the same person you voted. This has been happening for long and I pray it ends someday.

Am happy with the fact that you haven't given up on voting, you still believe your vote counts no matter what and that's true.

Political apathy is very wrong, even if there are many reasons for us to give up in casting our votes, let's still voting and praying for the country to be better. While in high school I learnt alot about political apathy in civic education, the meaning, it's forms and reasons people engage in political apathy. I wish you good luck in this contest and happy new month. 💜🇳🇬

We're taught these things in school, but having an experience is a whole different energy.

I pray we get to improve this idea of the system we practice. Every successful nation prays for this, and there's hope for us too.

Thanks for sharing, @saintkelvin17.

A blessed new month to you.

We're taught these things in school, but having an experience is a whole different energy.

Yeah an experience related to it is totally different and heartfelt. Yup there's definitely hope for us, we just need to believe and always do what's right.
