What is periodontics?

Periodontics can also be known as periodontology. And it is seen as a specialized kind of dentist who focus on the treatment, prevention and diagnosis of diseases which are affecting the teeth. This includes gingiva (gums) ,periodontal ligament, cementum and the alveolar bone. Periodontist are dentist who have additional training and studies on this areas allowing them to treat some complex periodontal conditions and perform procedures such like dental placements.

What are the parts that make up the periodontium?

The periodontium has many parts that helps and support the teeth

Gingiva (Gums)

This are the soft tissue which covers the alveolar bone and surrounds the teeth . Providing a barrier against infection. And it also helps to hold the teeth. And it is located below the teeth.

Periodontal Ligament

A connective tissue structure that helps in attaching the tooth root to the alveolar allowing for slight tooth movement and acting as an absorber of shock during chewing and eating.

Cementum

A fine layer covering the root of the tooth and it also helps to anchor the periodontal ligament fibers to the tooth.

Alveolar Bone

This bone contains socket for the teeth and it is very essential when teeth undergo remodeling in response to forces from chewing or loss of teeth .

What procedures do you perform?

Non-Surgical Treatments

Checking and planning a deep cleaning procedure to remove plaque and tartar from the gumline.

Also antimicrobial therapy application of medication can help to reduce the the bacteria in periodontal pockets.

Surgical treatment

To reduce the depth of gum pockets around the teeth you should consider going for pocket reduction surgery

Bone grafting this refers to the replacement of lost bone due to periodontal disease.

The placement of artificial or rubber tooth 🦷 for people who have lost tooth is which is called dental implants.

What are the diseases that attack the periodontium?

Gingivitis

This is one of the worst form of periodontal disease because it is characterized by gums inflammation often reversible if proper oral hygiene is offered.

Periodontitis

This is a severe condition where inflammation extends deep down into the supporting tissues, leading to loss of attachment and bone. It can result to tooth loss if not treated.

Other factors that contribute to periodontal disease are bod or poor oral hygiene, smoking,hormonal changes and certain intake of hard drugs.

Recommendations for caring for periodontal tissue

Practicing oral hygiene by brushing twice a day . With good and fluoride toothpaste to remove dirt and other substances between the teeth.

Avoid tobacco products as they increase the risk of getting periodontal disease and also time to time medical check up will help also.

Maintain a balanced and rich diet which contains minerals to support gum health,manage systematic condition like diabetes so as to clam the risk of having periodontal issues.

By adhering to all this a person can stay away from periodontal disease.
